Ginger and honey make a wonderful cough "syrup"..... you can use regular powdered ginger like you use for baking. Add about 1/4 teaspoon to 2 Tablespoons of honey..... mix well and then give one teaspoon or less at a time. Hope <rhfriese@... wrote: 1 large organic onion 1/2 c. honey 1 wide mouth quart jar. I blend a piece of fresh ginger cut up in small pieces with honey in the blender, then add 1/2 a teaspoon of tumeric powder to it. I would drink that twice a day, once in the morning after my breakfast and yoghurt. Another one at night last thing before I go to bed. I dont eat or drink anything for an hour after I have this ginger mixture. I feel relieved from cold. Hot water on a wash cloth and pour alchol on it... place it uner your nose and breath. Will give you a rest from the coughing for a while. Ginger tea: Peel some Ginger Root and grate it, put about 1 tsp. in a cup and pour boiling water over it [ifyou need a tea ball, use it], let it steep for at least 15 minuts, covered, strain, squeeeze 1/4 lemon into it and drink, 3-4 cups per day. Garlic: Chop a clove or raw garlic up fine and take a spoon, a bit at a time, without chewing it. Wash it down with warm water [or ginger tea], eat some fruit or yogurt afterwards, take this on an empty stomach. [3-4 cloves per day]. Gargle with, called MallebrinGargle with oil of oregano Boil a few pieces of garlic (unpeeled and cut in small pieces) in some water with honey and simmer it until the "broth" becomes thick, still liquid, but a thick liquid. Put liquid thru a strainer and keep only the liquid. The result is something strange and sweet. One teaspoon of that liquid on the morning or in the evening! After a couple of days the cough will be gone. Never take more than one (or maybe 2) teaspoons a day, as it is a very concentrated liquid and can also harm you. Because of the garlic. Too much of garlic at first. ZINC LOZENGE'S AND ZICAM Seth seth@... wrote: Sugar free zinc lozenge's. Guifisen made by Robitussin does have sugar in it however. I mix 1 t. salt, 1/4 t. soda, and 8 oz. distilled water in the bottle, and heat for about 30 seconds in the microwave. You simply lean over the sink and relax, press the bottle against one nostril, and squeeze the bottle . . then do the same on the other side. The solution goes up one nostril and out the other. There's no burning. Used twice daily I've seen great improvements and have to take no antihistamines for the seasonal allergies. http://www.nasalrinse.com or http://www.neilmed.com. "Kay Stence" <kstence@...> NASAL WASH This is more or less copied (paraphrasing, abbreviations, but all the info is the same) from a handout my doctor gave me. Hope it helps - it did for me once I finally stopped being such a wimp. Take care, Fayge THE RECIPE Carefully clean and rinse a 1 qt. glass jar. Fill the clean jar with tap or bottled water. You do not have to boil the water. Add to -3 heaping teaspoons of kosher salt. Do not use table salt which has unwanted additives. [Note: the paper also mentioned pickling/canning - maybe an error, I don't know about additives, FY] Add 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda (pure bicarbonate). Stir or shake before each use. Store at room temperature. After a week, pour out any mixture that is left over and make a new recipe. If the mixture seems too strong, use less salt - try 1 1/2 - 2 teaspoons salt. For children, it's best to start with a weaker salt mixture. Then gradually increase to using up to 2 -3 heaping teaspoons. HOW TO RINSE Plan to rinse the nose with salt water mixture 2 -3 x /day. Make the salt water and baking soda mixture according to the recipe. You will need a bulb/ear syringe, a large medical syringe (30 ml) or a Waterpik. * Pour some mix into a clean bowl. Many people like to warm in microwave to about body temp. Be sure it's not too hot. * Fill syringe with salt water from bowl. DO NOT put used syringe back into jar; will contaminate water. * Stand over sink or in shower and squirt water into your nose. Aim the stream toward the back of your head, not the top. This lets you spit some out. It will not hurt to swallow a little. * Most people notice a mild burning feeling the first few times they use it. This goes a way in a few days. FOR YOUNG CHILDREN You can put water in a small commercial spray container like a nasal steroid spray bottle. Squirt it many times into each side of the nose. Do not force child to lie down. This rinse is easier to do when sitting or standing. IF YOU USE A NASAL STEROID You should always use the salt water first, then the nasal spray. The steroid works better when it is sprayed on to the nasal membranes that have been cleaned and decongested by the salt water, and will reach deeper into the nose and sinuses.
