Guest guest
Mainichi Daily News Thursday, March 16, 2000 Drug dose blunder leaves school kids suffering By Koji MizutaniMainichi Shimbun HAKUTA, Shimane - Sixth-graders of three elementary schools here had been injected with five times the correct dose of a vaccine in February, the municipal government here admitted Wednesday. Some pupils had a swelling caused by allergic reactions on their arms, but no serious ill effects from the blunder were reported as of Wednesday, officials of the local government said. But the officials were taking no chances. "Parents of the pupils are deeply concerned. We will continue to monitor the children's conditions for next few years," an official of the Hakuta Municipal Government said. Forty-six final year pupils of three elementary schools in Hakuta's Yasuda, Ijiri, and Mori districts were administered with 0.5 milliliter of a mixed vaccination for diphtheria and tetanus - five times above the required dose - from Feb. 8 to 23. An unnamed nurse who prepared the injections said she thought that the amount was same as another vaccination she prepared last year. She did not notice her blunder until a school nurse spotted the mistake on Feb. 29 when they were preparing for a vaccination session in another school in the town. All children underwent thorough health checks this month, but no one was seriously affected, the officials said.
