Guest guest
Hi Stehpanie -its the dr. kuri board. i'm still there everyday. i get the digest and respond whenever i feel i can make a difference, but my remarks are often not what the poster desired and i get the flack. currently and for the last two weeks, i had addressed someone who was complaining about the horrors of band life and used another example of a friend who was banded 7 years ago who had a slip. her posting was so negative and unbalanced i felt compelled to add my two cents, which were primarily that the picture she was paingting was lopsided and since there were a lot of newbies and soon to be's on the board, it would be better to provide a more balanced view, even when asking for help for a certain problem and acknowledging that in any endeavor such as banding, there going to be bumps in the road. her venomous response was entitled " EXCUSE ME , GEORGE??????? " (In much bolder type). since then there have been about 50 comments on the board, not necessarily pertaining to this issue, but sent as a response to that title. " EXCUSE ME GEORGE " Its hilarious, when i think about it. one person even said that the moderators should bar me from the site. (i'm not going to mention marylin dempsey's name, though) truth be told, since SandyR isn't there too often anymore, i'm the only one who doesn't coddle the whiners. so that's the story. it simply amazes me that some people think support means getting a pat on the back, when true support helps make a difference. you know, if someone loses someone close, that deserves a pat on the back, in sympathy and support, but if they use that loss to justify eating out of control, a pat on the back is damaging not helpful. and that's how i see the differentiation. and all this, in my never humble opinion. Guest guest
And here I thought someone was referring to " the other board " as in SmartBandsters, as opposed to . Sandy and I and many others who are here are/were members there. They have about four times as many members and there are LOTS of msgs every day. There are also some anal compulsive whiners there who are generally in charge. Sandy and I are both banned from there due to not letting whiners get away with all the crap that they dump. Show up, suit up, shut up, follow directions. And quit your bitching. Well, they didn't like that. The only other " problem " there is that there are many not yet banded folks who have lots of questions. Well, that is important for them to be able to do that, but we decided to have a place where it was ONLY for those who already had a band (well, for at least a couple hours). So here we are. dan " Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. Guest guest
Dan, you are so right about the " other " board! I had joined and it was MANDATORY that I had to receive each and every message that was posted individually instead of a digest. Well the first day and hubby had a fit because he came home from work and there were 96 messages! I switched the email address to my , and it was such a hassle to read each and every message individually that I dropped after 5 days! I can see what you mean about " anal " , also, most of that board seems to be situated in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. Not much use to me unless I plan a vacation and plan on staying for a few months! So.since I am getting the band on Thursday, can I stay until then? I promise not to ask a bunch of stupid questions! I have done enough homework just reading through the archives for my questions that I don't feel the need to ask anything ridiculous on this board. Please don't kick me out of the clubhouse yet! I promise to have my lunch money to give you on Thursday!! :-) Misty
Guest guest
Hi, Misty ! You're very welcome! all the other forums also have an option to receive daily digests or no rmails at all if you prefer. Most other boards do too. It's in the " edit my membership " area. Any and all questions are welcome here, if people are banded. we just felt that with a smaller and more personal board, that we didn't want to spend time with all the pre-band questions like " what is a fill? " " Should I get a band or a bypass? " W're here for people who are already committed to banding. We also know that we have to forget all the excuses. Between Dan and me, I'm sure we have personally used every one of them to excuse our weight and other problems. No more excuses! We have to take responsibility for our own actions and their outcomes. We have all gotten into very serious trouble with our wt becuase of all the excuses. So now it's time to face the facts and make the needed changes. We'll help all we can, even though what we feel we need to say sometimes is not always easy to hear. Guest guest
It isn't mandatory to receive each and every e mail, you can always read the posts on the website. I believe that both boards have their purpose. I stay on the Kuri site just to help the new people that have questions, to be there for them like someone was there for me when I was new. When you are new it is helpful to read experiences from people that are going through the same things. Although I do miss the posts from Sandy, she is so knowledgeable and helpful, I still enjoy helping the newbies out on that site. I do get the individual emails and it usually is about ten to fifteen a day, sometimes just a few and sometimes more. Guest guest
Hi Elaine, it is mandatory to read each and every email or else she won't approve you to join the group. I chose the " daily digest " like I do for all the groups and she automatically changes it to all emails. If you choose " no email " she will decline your membership. She is worried about spammers or something but it is just neurotic and controlling to me. Life is too short for that. Also there are these numerous, numerous rules that have to be followed or you are kicked out out of the gang. Misty > Dan, you are so right about the " other " board! Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I like that attitude and believe me, that is what I need! No excuses! My main fear about being banded on Thursday is my tendency to " graze " . A nibble here, a bite there, etc. The calories really add up and are filling. My mother does the same thing and we haven't lived together for 24 years! Hubby is going to help me with that to make it a conscious behavior because I really don't realize that I am doing it. We have come up with the strategy that just might work and will try it for the next few days of my liquid diet and then after surgery...chewing gum all the time while in the kitchen. Gum and bites of spaghettios just don't mix well IMHO. I really want the band to work and all the advice on this board has been so helpful. Thanks--Misty > > Hi, Misty ! Guest guest
Also Sandy, if I come on here and sound depressed, scared, or negative, you have my permission to give me a swift kick in the arse to get me back on track. Be blunt, be honest, no sugar coating, Simon- Cowell-type responses. I am scared, very hungry on the liquid diet but know that the band is the best thing that can happen to me in this 20+ battle with weight gain/weight loss. My best friend food is just going to have to find a new friend because I don't want to die an early death from health problems. I want to live a long and healthy life shared with my family as long as I can. I also am a role model to 3 young kids and don't want them to take on this family legacy of obesity when they become adults. So, if I start thinking only of the short-term joys of eating the things I shouldn't, remind me of the long-term benefits of weight loss. thanks--being banded on Thursday. Starving on the liquid diet but so worth it!! misty > > > > Hi, Misty ! Guest guest
Of course you may stay. I have no way of knowing whether anyone who signs up has a band or not. You're not the first one to do so, nor, I'm sure, the last. But since all " first messages " to the list take approval by Sandy or me, the few from " wannabe bandsters " don't get approved for distribution. That also takes care of those who join the list to spam us with assorted dirty pictures, drugs for sale, increasing size of body parts, and all that. Once someone has made an appropriate first post, they're approved for regular membership, meaning that whatever you post gets automatically distributed. cheers dan, and I'll be looking for that lunch money Re: Issues > Dan, you are so right about the " other " board! Guest guest
I can't speak for the Kuri board, since I'm not his patient. But unless they've recently changed the rules, SmartBandsters will NOT allow you to digest and will NOT allow you to be web only message reading. The theory is that will keep the number of members down. Well, yeah, I suppose. Whatever, but the owner of that group needs to take some metamucil cookies to relieve the constipation. Or the constipation in the brain.... Personally, I hate digests and hate web mail, so that part wasn't a problem to me....but the rest was...so they dumped me. Guest guest
Which " she " is doing that now? Private reply is fine. The original, and actual, owner is of the male persuasion. I used to be a moderator there, but they canned me from that after I permitted a few " critical of the group " posts through. Then not long after, they canned me totally and permanently. I'm tempted sometime to join up under a different ID, but that's too much trouble and I just don't care that much. dan Re: Issues > Hi Elaine, it is mandatory to read each and every email or else she > won't approve you to join the group. Guest guest
Hi Misty, Well, as noted, we will " kick butt and take names " if and when that is required on anyone. As you know, " if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen " . You said in another msg that you have three little kids. Even for them, there are alternatives to Spaghetti-Os. Really. Not that my kids didn't get them at times....but that was thirty years ago.....before I got older and smarter. So keep the nibbly crap out of the house. Kids naturally think they 'have to have' all sorts of crap. But of course so did we for most of our lives. Hang in there dan Re: Issues > Hi Sandy, I like that attitude and believe me, that is what I need! > No excuses! My main fear about being banded on Thursday is my > tendency to " graze " . Guest guest
I've never been on smartbandsters and I don't know who the owner is. I do Kuri because he is my Dr. and to help people when I can. Guest guest
Misty, which board is this that requires this?? That's ridiculous! Guest guest
That would be smartbandsters. Set up a fake email and go try and join the group and set your messages to daily digest or no emails. They will approve you on the digest, but you have to email him stating you are indeed a real person, then he manually goes and changes your preferences to all messages. As for no emails, he will deny your membership. I am serious, the first day I joined and was " approved " I had 96 messages when I got home from school. Hubby was ticked. Guest guest
Agree about the spaghettios, its not an everyday thing. About once every 2 weeks I just get lazy and make a can for my girls. My son won't touch the stuff. We try to keep good food in the house for their meals and snacks, that family obesity legacy thing needs to stop with us. My kids view spaghettios as a special meal, kind of like TV dinners and a babysitter when my mom when out when I was growing up. My kids are great about eating fruit...its the veggie/salad that I can't seem to get them to like or even try. Carrot sticks are about the extent of their vegetable exposure which is unfortunate. I love vegetables/salads and eat them almost daily, trying to model that behavior but hubby won't do it so they follow his lead of " yuck veggies " . We are working on that. Guest guest
OK I was confused, I thought you were talking about the Kuri board mommisty1968 <doroshow@...> wrote: That would be smartbandsters. Guest guest
Hi Elaine, I was referring to the moderator of smartbandsters and Dan's comment pertaining to his need to be more " regular " . I apologize for the confusion. I believe it is my lack of calories on this pre-op diet that is making me forgetful. Misty > > > Dan, you are so right about the " other " board! Guest guest
Thanks Misty, I didn't realize we were talking about both other boards. Good luck on your upcoming surgery and new life. mommisty1968 <doroshow@...> wrote: Hi Elaine, I was referring to the moderator of smartbandsters and Dan's comment pertaining to his need to be more " regular " . Guest guest
hello there misty, here comes the swift kick you requested. (LOL) you don't have to give up your best friend food. it is not your friend. in fact, it is the enemy. so make a 180 degree turn right now and face the fact that a friend wouldn't give you the results food has produced up to now. so in making your attitude shift, and recognizing that you are struggling with hunger on your LSD, try this one on for size. the beautiful feeling of running on empty. get to like it. get to appreciate it. stop and experience it without stuffing it back with food. it can make an enormous difference in your experience of banding. it will help you to recognize the soft signs that help you stop eating post banding. when you eat, stop and smell the roses. good luck on thursday and welcome to this incredible journey. george > > Also Sandy, if I come on here and sound depressed, scared, or > negative, you have my permission to give me a swift kick in the arse > to get me back on track. Guest guest
You are so right. Feeling hunger these last 9 days has been very humbling for me. I can't remember feeling hunger since September when I had lost 35 pounds on Atkins Diet. The end of September my beloved 91 year old grandfather died. He was like a father to me and I miss him terribly. I gained back the 35 pounds lost and when I look back and ask myself why, I really think it is because feeling full made me feel " safe " . I don't know what other way to explain it. Now, being almost 39, I haven't gone without " real food " for about 20 years and this experience has been very good for me because it made me realize that there are millions of people all over the world who go hungry at night, especially children. They don't have the money or resources for food. Here I am, in the most prosperous country in the world, driving my brand new car (a kia, but still!!) living in my beautiful new house, with a fantastic husband, and 3 of the best kids you'll ever want to meet, very healthy for being over 100 pounds overweight with no high bp, diabetes, etc)...and I realize that I REALLY have it good, hunger and all. So, hunger and I are going to be friends now. I have no fear of him anymore. The band will help satisfy that hunger. I am OBVIOUSLY not going to " starve " to death with my heavy insulation. My love affair with food has come to an end. It's not going to " comfort " me the way it used to when I get the band this week. I have to admit I am scared, and might have to go through a mourning period like I did with my grandfather, but the one thing positive I can say about that is my grandfather was a very active and healthy man who lived 91 years because of his lifestyle. Up until a few months of his death, he continued walking to the store and back daily to get his groceries and his exercise, a mile each way. He ate healthy and normal portions and loved playing golf and walking 18 holes a few days a week. He was truly a role model for me and the one thing I know he would love to have happen for me is to get healthy and have a long life like he had rich with grandchildren to spoil and dote over. His family was his greatest asset, and my 2 brothers and 3 sisters will always treasure the time we had with him. In part, getting this band will help me model after him, since I haven't been able to do it on my own. I pray that throughout my life I can be as positive of an influence in my childrens lives as he was on mine. He may be gone, but my cherished memories of him will always be here. Thanks . You are correct on the feeling of running on empty. It almost feels " normal " . Guest guest
Well, yes, it is a he. I mentioned " she " since there are, or at least were, several of them helping by following the same regs. The real irony is that he's gained weight back, has also switched or reverted back to a different addiction, and has behaved inappropriately with more than one bandster female. Well, no one said that putting a band around our tummies would put one around our head to shrink it too.....as many of us know from personal experience. dan Re: Issues > You are correct..it is a " he " and not a she.
