UPCOMING AUTISM AND DISABILITY RELATED TRAINING PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

ACTION ALERT - AUTISM INSURANCE DISCRIMINATION

*Message from NAA-NEO's parent organization, the National Autism Association (NAA)

Dear Autism Advocate,Last week Congressman Mike Doyle, member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and Chair of the Congressional Autism Caucus spoke for our community and delivered a message to them that we have been hammering Congress with. Health reform

that does not stop autism insurance discrimination is unacceptable. Any health reform.Speaker Pelosi, despite and outpouring of phone calls from our community, has remained silent. It is not too late to heat things up by FAXING her office! Make sure that she and her staff do not get one moment to rest as a result of all the communications they receive from the autism community. HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP!1. FAX A NOTE TO SPEAKER PELOSI at 202-225-4188 with the message on it and a paragraph about why this is important to your family.

Don't have a fax machine handy? Autism Votes (www.autismvotes.org) has a form that makes it easy - just like sending an email. A fax machine is not required but once you press send a fax will be on its way to her office. 2. CALL SPEAKER PELOSI's OFFICE AND

CONTINUE TO DELIVER THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE: Health reform that does not stop autism insurance discrimination is unacceptable. Then call her again. * Please be polite and persistent until you get through. * When they ask you what you are calling for say AUTISM INSURANCE REFORM before they switch you to voicemail. * If the voicemail is full, call back and say to the staff person answering the phone first thing "The voicemail is full, I need you to take down this message in writing for Speaker Pelosi." * If they tell you to call your Congressman with your message tell them "No, this message is for Speaker Pelosi."After you leave one message, call back and leave another one. 72 children will be

diagnosed today and they will need appropriate health insurance coverage for the treatments and therapies that will ameliorate their medical condition. You can reach the Speaker's Office at 202-225-0100.3. GET EVERYONE TO DO THIS AGAIN OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

We cannot let up. Get at least 20 people that you know to do the same thing. We cannot give them a moment to rest until Speaker Pelosi makes a public comment and demonstrates that she has heard us.

Think Autism. Think Cure. ®

COUNTY BOARDS OF MR/DD CHANGE THEIR NAME

On Tuesday, July 7, 2009, Governor Ted Strickland signed legislation deleting the term “mental retardation†from the names of county boards of mental retardation and developmental disabilities and the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. For example, the Board in Cuyahoga County ’s new name will be Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The name change does not change eligibility for programs and services. It does not change what the County Boards do. They remain the same agency that has been providing vocational, educational, habilitation, residential, therapeutic and other services for children and adults with developmental disabilities for more than 40 years.

TRANSITION PLANNING WORKSHOP BY TOOLS FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW

From the moment a student walks through the school door for the first time, most people are already thinking about what that student will do the day they graduate. For students who have challenges in their learning styles, social skills, and behavior management, the transition from the school setting to adult life must be well planned.

This presentation for parents addresses the steps to developing a successful Individual Education Program for students with disabilities who are of transition age (14+). Topics will include how to develop a future plan, courses of study in high school, and what is involved in writing goals for post-high school experiences. The outcome is to increase a student’s opportunities for successful transition from the school setting to adult life.

PARENT-INITIATED WATERPARK FUNDRAISER

Please read about this parent-driven Waterpark fundraiser for the Autism Speaks Walk this Fall.

Please contact at .Kingsley@... for more information.

Please note that the deadline to receive this discounted rate is August 26, 2009.

"I am sponsoring a fundraising event for my son’s Walk Now For Autism Speaks team – Team Adam – which I would love to share with your distribution if you’re willing to post it.

It is a discounted room at Kalahari Waterpark for September 25th to the 26th. The price of $148 includes for up to 4 guests per room, waterpark passes for both Friday and Saturday. The cost for additional people in the room ($20) also includes waterpark passes – which is a GREAT deal.

I also have Sensory Room reserved and staffed, and have confirmed that the chefs in the restaurants can accommodate special diets.

I set this up because my kids (my son is 7 and has an autism diagnosis) simply LOVES the waterpark and I hope that all kids with autism have this experience.

Note that the park is open to the public, but I am trying to accommodate some of the special needs our kids have with the sensory room."

$25 from each room is going to Autism Speaks.
