Guest guest
Yes, I and others here have had worsening of asthma and re-growth of polyps. Your smell may come back, mine did after 10 years. Getting control of the symptoms is key to reducing the inflammatory response. Your drug regime sounds effective. Research the archive posts and the files for aspirin desensitization. It is the miracle answer for some of us. Talk to your doctor about GERD. It could be damaging your sinus and lungs without causing noticeable heartburn. You should try to avoid so many surgeries through prevention. Try a diet like " Feingold " . Guest guest
I have a story very similar to you, but my samters started when I was 10, and now I am 48. Luckily my asthma did not increase at the rate as my polyps, but then, everyone is different. I hope your asthma will not get worse, like mine. New member here, with my story. About six years ago I started sneezing whenever I took aspirin. Thiswas after using large amounts my whole life. I am 61 years old now. MyDoc told me to take tylenol. About a year later I was having a lot of discharge and troublebreathing. I could see some growths in my nostrils so I contacted anear, nose, and throat doctor. He quickly determined that I had nasalpolyps and scheduled surgery, along with a complete series of allergytesting. At that time, it was determined that I had no allergies. About two years later, I started having similar symptoms and againI was scheduled for my second nasal polyp surgery. 18 months later, mythird. 11 months after that, I had my fourth polyp surgery. This time, the doctor used a new mapping type CAT scan to more closely guide himin his surgery. In addition to removing the polyps, he also cut backsome of my tubulators. He assured me that he would not have to dosurgery again. When I went in for my four month exam, I was already starting toexperience the all too familiar symptoms. The doc confirmed that thepolyps were starting to regrow and that I would probably need surgeryby the end of the year. Ever since the first surgery, I had been on a Nasonex regime. After the second surgery I was able to get back some of my sense ofsmell by using prednisone, but the doc only tried that a few times. Bythe time I had my third surgery, I had lost most of my sense of smelland I doubt if it will return. My last surgery was last October and my exam was in February. InMarch, after having some shoulder pain, I took one 325mg aspirin tosee if it would help. This was the first aspirin that I had taken inalmost six years. In 1 1/2 hours I was in the emergency room hooked upto oxygen and being given an IV with Benedryl and Pepcid. I left thereseveral hours later with a prescription for 60mg prednisone daily forfour days, and two Epipens(epinephrine) in case I have another attack. I contacted my doctor and he scheduled me to see an allergyspecialist. He did the asthma testing and it was determined that mypeak flow capacity had been reduced to 66%. I am currently using Asmanex and Nasonex every morning, along withone loratidine pill, and two Singular pills every day. In addition, Iam using 1200 mg of Calcium and 400 mg of vitamin D daily. Afterhaving been on this regime for the past month, I am doing about thebest that I have done in the past several years. I still don't havemuch sense of smell, but I am not getting much discharge and canusually get a good nights sleep. I'm OK with having polyp surgery whenever it is needed and afterso many years, I have gotten used to my lack of smell. What I amconcerned about is whether or not my asthma will worsen as quickly asmy polyp growth has. It is obvious that I have Samters but my doctoris being very vague about my long term prognosis. He has scheduledanother complete series of allergy tests next month, but judging fromthose around me, I still don't have a problem with allergies. Have any of you experienced worsening asthma symptoms?
Guest guest
Surgery begets surgery. It is a mechanical " solution " to a chemical problem. Avoid it. Irrigation. Desensitization. Guest guest
I do use an irrigator with the BreatheEase solution regularly, but it seems to have a negligible effect. As I mentioned, I do not have any allergies so dust and pollen don't seem to bother me. I have not had any reactions from food either. The only " asthma attack " that I have had was my severe reaction to the aspirin. This may change in the future but I don't know as this triad is all new to me. Desensitization was discussed with the allergist but he did not recommend it, because of some dangers involved. He did mention that there is a new drug that should be on the market soon that is a replacement for Nasonex. Apparently it is more powerful and may minimize the polyp growth. Right now I believe he is trying to find the best course of medicine to put me on. From reading the various posts in this group, it seems that the aspirin desensitization appears to be only a temporary solution and that the aspirin dosage is regularly increased as the patient's needs changes. > > Surgery begets surgery. > It is a mechanical " solution " to a chemical problem. > Avoid it. > > Irrigation. > Desensitization. > Either/both will lessen the risk/impact of asthma. > > > > From: " rpg4444 " <rpg4444@...> > > Reply-samters > > Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 17:11:03 -0000 > > samters > > Subject: New member here, with my story. > > > > About six years ago I started sneezing whenever I took aspirin. Guest guest
I want to thank all of you for your responses. Since I do not appear to have any allergies(I will be tested again next month) do you think that a change in diet would have a beneficial effect? Right now, the only thing that triggered my one attack was the aspirin. I realize that many products contain aspirin in varying quantities and I am avoiding all of them. > > > About six years ago I started sneezing whenever I took aspirin. Guest guest
I just got back from my ENT. He seems to think his last surgery did more to arrest my polyp growth than taking singulair. I find this interesting and frustrating as he had done so many surgeries before and the only thing that was different this time was beginning to use singulair. I have never gone so long without using steroids or having a sinus infection or needing minor surgery. (3 ½ years) I asked about aspirin desentization and gave him the information from this site from Scripps. He seems marginally interested. Does anyone know of a Doctor in Houston, TX that does desense????I would like my sense of smell back if possible. Guest guest
Allergies are different from sensitivities. You are not truly allergic to aspirin, most samterites are not. There is tiny amounts of aspirin naturally in some fruits, spices and additives that you may be reacting to. Also, many here have problems when consuming sulfites and MSG. Try the diet for two weeks and see, you may be surprised. Guest guest
hello, for me asa desens was only a temporary solution. for about a year i was great and now i am almost back to how i was preop. your body becomes tolerant to it just like other meds. my only solution is to up the dose, which i already did once. i do not want to take a higher dose because i already bleed like crazy with even a simple paper cut. i am trying some new herbal things and will let everyone know if they work. laura > > > > Surgery begets surgery. > > It is a mechanical " solution " to a chemical problem. > > Avoid it. > > > > Irrigation. > > Desensitization. > > Either/both will lessen the risk/impact of asthma. > > > > > > > From: " rpg4444 " <rpg4444@> > > > Reply-samters > > > Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 17:11:03 -0000 > > > samters > > > Subject: New member here, with my story. > > > > > > About six years ago I started sneezing whenever I took aspirin. Guest guest
Carol, Please understand that this is all new to me. I am just going by what I read in some of the previous posts. I have many questions and a lot to learn. As I mentioned, my allergist does do desensitization, but he did not recommend it in my case. Not being a doctor myself, and realizing that there is not a single course of treatment that fits all, at this point I have to let him do what he feels is best, and see what the outcome is. I also have a question about the Feingold diet. I believe the concept of the diet is to attempt to remove as much residual aspirin from your diet as possible. Isn't that contradictory to those that feel that aspirin desensitization is the best way to go. I may be wrong but if you remove all aspirin from your system isn't it possible that you may actually be increase\ing your risks to asthma attacks and polyp growth? As I said, this is all new to me and I am still trying to sort out the different treatments. > > > > Surgery begets surgery. > > It is a mechanical " solution " to a chemical problem. > > Avoid it. > > > > Irrigation. > > Desensitization. > > Either/both will lessen the risk/impact of asthma. Guest guest
This is a confusing disease. My theory is that the syndrome begets itself. I need to reduce the symptoms by what ever means. I prefer natural ones rather than drugs but I am resigned to drugs as well. If the diet helps, great, it isn't forever. Avoidance of triggers, exercise, healthy habits and drugs can get me over the hump and then I pick and choose my poisons and compromises. Do you get it? You have to find your way over the hump. Aspirin is also a safety precaution to avoid future exasperations. (an angle to sell to your allergist) Pam > Carol, > Please understand that this is all new to me. Guest guest
Pam, I agree, it is all very confusing. Obviously whatever works the best for you is the path you should take. Finding the path that works the best seems to be the most difficult. Picking a path can be either beneficial, or deadly, which makes it even more difficult to chose. I was fortunate enough to make it to the hospital in time after I took one aspirin. Prior to that, an aspirin had only made me sneeze. > >>> > >>> Surgery begets surgery. > >>> It is a mechanical " solution " to a chemical problem. > >>> Avoid it. > >>> > >>> Irrigation. > >>> Desensitization. > >>> Either/both will lessen the risk/impact of asthma. > >>> > >>> >
Guest guest
That was interesting, thank you for the good research. Diet wise, I have been successful with avoiding artificial colors, sweeteners and flavors. I also don’t eat much sugar and no milk. MSG always bothers me and sulphites sometimes do. I have no problem with fruits or alcohol. Guest guest
My sinus are now blocked again. I had surgery in April of 2006 and now they are worse. I stopped taking the Singulair because the sideeffects were really bad. When I take Singulair, I get dizzy when I standup and the right side of my body would tingle and get a numb feeling. Guest guest
I'm always doing research although there is nothing ever conclusive. Very frustrating, but I'll keep trying. If I find anything compelling I will, of course, forward to the group. The only things that seem to bother me food-wise are beer & wine (although 1 glass of wine is not a problem). I do feel better when I keep up with my daily exercize and eat sensibly. I try to avoid a lot of sugar and highly processed carbs. Currently I am trying to lose a significant amount of weight around 10% of my bodyweight) in the hopes that something will change. Wishful thinking, I know. At the very least I will be healthier....Pamela <pam@...> wrote: That was interesting, thank you for the good research.Diet wise, I have been successful with avoiding artificial colors, sweeteners and flavors. I also don’t eat much sugar and no milk. MSG always bothers me and sulphites sometimes do. I have no problem with fruits or alcohol.PamOn 6/21/07 1:47 PM, "Dana Preis" <danapreis > wrote: This is interesting: http://www.aaaai.org/aadmc/ate/category.asp?cat=1128 see the third question down. dp
Guest guest
I am sick and tired of pills, capsules sprays and anything else related to Samter's. I am sick and tire of being sick and having limitations. I am just venting today so bare with me. I just want one day without a shotty nose, huffing and puffing and having to stop and catch my breath. Guest guest
I can understand the need to vent at times but the alternative to taking pills, sprays etc. isn’t a good choice. At least we’re still ‘above the ground’ and can live a reasonable life. Yes I’d love to be able to have a sense of smell and breathe easily but .. Guest guest
I’ve never taken Singulair but my ENT has me on Nasonex which could be similar and it works really well. Been two years now since my last surgery and so far so good. From: samters [mailto:samters ] On Behalf Of gwenrafter@... Sent: Friday, 22 June 2007 5:08 AM samters Subject: Re: New member here, with my story. My sinus are now blocked again. I had surgery in April of 2006 and now they are worse. I stopped taking the Singulair because the sideeffects were really bad. When I take Singulair, I get dizzy when I standup and the right side of my body would tingle and get a numb feeling. I was able to associate it to the Singulair and I stopped taking it. New member here, with my story. > > About six years ago I started sneezing whenever I took aspirin. Guest guest
Singulair and Nasonex are very different drugs. Many people take both. Singulair is a very safe drug, cleared for children. Guest guest
Thanks Pam, I’ve only ever heard of Singulair through here as it’s unavailable where I live. I have no idea if Nasonex is safe for children or not. From: samters [mailto:samters ] On Behalf Of Pamela Sent: Friday, 22 June 2007 7:00 AM samters Subject: Re: New member here, with my story.
