I, too, was reactive to Tylenol - not a severe reaction like ASA - but tightness

in my chest

and a lot of wheezing. If I had not felt well - usually, I was taking the

Tylenol for a sinus

headache & stuffed sinuses = some wheezing to start. Does not seem to bother me

post

ASA desen.

The baby aspirin contain the lowest dose (81mg) available over the counter. I use a pill cutter and (try to) cut it into eighths (10mg). The enteric coated, which are harder to cut, are supposed to protect the stomach. I would probably not use these for desens.

I have also used Alka-Seltzer before. Here's my "theory". One tablet contains 325mg of aspirin. I dissolve ONE tablet in 16 ounces of water. That means 1 ounce should have about 20mg of ASA. I seem to react quicker using this method. I think it just gets into my system faster because it is already dissolved. I do wonder if the aspirin is evenly distributed in the water but it worked for me.

One other way is to find a compounding pharmacist who can make you up capsules with whatever dosage you want. This will cost a little more but you know that you are getting exact doses.

Hope this helps.

OK, so there I was; staring at the mind-boggling array of aspirin packages. I haven't bought aspirin since...well...ever, I think. It seems to break down to this: There are chewables, enteric coated, or plain. They are available in 81mg, or 325mg. I would love to know what the pain relievers were that you were taking

and what was the active ingredient. If it was acetaminophen or

whatever the British equivalent is, I would be very very very very very

cautious with DIY aspirin desensitization. I think those who are

sensitive to Tylenol/acetaminophen may have much worse reactions to

aspirin, based upon my observations and personal experience.

Please consider this very careful when embarking on this. What is your

rescue plan?

Yeah, those were pills from the little convenience packs they have at work. They're called Aypanal. Brand name Swift. Contains: acetaminophen.

I haven't figured out a rescue plan yet. I'll be seeing my doctor tomorrow. Maybe he'll work with me on this. I would want to at least have a nebulizer, and some prednisone handy.

I'm gonna call around to some of the better hospitals/clinics around here first, to see if I can find any doctors with experience in this. My doctor has heard of ASA desensitizing, but has no experience with it.

I tried emailing Allergy Associates of LaCrosse, Wi. They are a well established allergy clinic that desensitizes people to their allergens by using drops under the tongue. They replied by stating that ASA intolerence is not an actual allergy to aspirin, so they don't handle that.

I live in Eau , WI. We have some big clinics that might have someone that knows something.

Thanks. This method sounds more precise than dissolved Alka-Seltzers.

The University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison has an Allergy/Asthma Clinic that has a desens program. I am planning to go there in the near future. The details are on our sites database.

Just to chime in, I've always desensitized by splitting a baby aspirin into 4 parts, and starting with 20. But for my day to day aspirin, i usually take it as alka seltzer. On Jan 6, 2008 8:46 PM, B_Buzz_DT <

Prenisone is going to do absolutely nothing for you in my opinion in

an acute attack induced by aspirn. I've never been given steroids in

this case, I have never heard of anyone getting steroids in this

case, and I think having it around is a false sense of security.

Someone posted that there is some clinic or such in Madison,

Wisconsin where they do desensitization -- it's the first listing in

the database section under aspirin desensitization providers. So it

isn't next door, but it's sure close enough for you to try them.

If you reacted to Aypanal, acetaminophen, that's a bad sign that your

aspirin/NSAID sensitivity is quite high.

I hope you will contact the clinic in Madison, the phone number and

info is on our site under database and consider doing this under

direct supervision.

Good luck,

I posted the information on Madison, WI. I have an appointment there in April( alas long waiting list). But definitely they have a program for desen.

I will share relevant details after the appointment.

I am so glad that this group exists.

ps One of my hereditary situations is Alpha1.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (Alpha-1) is a protein that is produced mostly in the liver. Its primary function is to protect the lungs from neutrophil elastase. Neutrophil elastase is an enzyme that normally serves a useful purpose in lung tissue-it digests damaged or aging cells and bacteria to promote healing. However, if left unchecked, it will also attack healthy lung tissue. Alpha-1 antitrypsin, in sufficient amounts, will trap and destroy neutrophil elastase before it has a chance to begin damaging the delicate lung tissue. Consequently, if an individual doesn't have enough alpha-1 antitrypsin, the enzyme goes unchecked and attacks the lung.

Does anyone else have this also?

If you live in Eau , WI, you are only 90 miles from the

Twin Cities. Dr. Jack Mutnick (612) 625-5656 does ASA desensitization at the

University of Minnesota Hospital. I’m waiting to have it done after I get a

sinus infection cleared up. Let me know if you need any more information.
