Guest guest
Hi all listmates I was wondering if there are members who live in the following towns Teaneck, NJ Englewood Cliffs, NJ Deamerest, NJ Norwood, NJ Closter, NJ I wanted input on how the school districts are in reference to special education, and if any of the districts have preschool (for 3 yr olds) programs for autism. Any input is apprecitated. (You can email me off list) We currently live in Cliffside Park (which has a in district program) and are looking to relocated in the future. Thanks Mona mbhansali6@... Guest guest
Cheryl, There seem to be differences here as there are with our kids. Your school district seems to have 75,000 students out of which there are 10,000 in special ed. Most of us seem to be in school districts that are a whole lot smaller. Ours is about 2000 students. So an out of district placement in our school district would still be in-district for you even if it was another zone. Across the country, school districts seem to be defined differently. Not every district is like yours. Most are incredibly smaller and often do not have the critical mass to provide all the services their students might need. We had cooperation between school districts (even their agregate wasn't equal to the massive size you quote) and we were able to choose programs in other schools that matched our children's needs. When my daughter was in the school system, the local district simply didn't have appropriate programs. Because of its small size, they grouped LD and ED students into the same environment. They also had an attitude that special ed was only for the lower grades because the students would be able to handle middle and high school without sped. In my era, we were focused on teaching our children all they could learn and much less on social issues. We felt that we could cover those outside of school and I'd guess that we didn't do all that badly. Rick

Life skills can be taught at home. I am fearing they will try to exclude Sara from SS and Science next year and I won't let this happen. How much time do they really need to work on reading and math skills, without losing the child out of boredom? Let me share what happened this weekend, Sara and I were watching a broadcast of the Columbia accident. I explained to Sara in simple terms that this was a spaceship that blew up, very sad. She asked me which planet were they going to? Mars? Pluto? or Saturn? Now let me tell you she never would have had access to this information in the Sped room. She also has been learning about and and is retaining the information and LOVING IT!!!! Language is what I want out of Reg Ed, access to the curriculum like the other kids. Social behaviors comes second to that. This is how I look at it for Sara...... the Sped class is for skill building (reading and math), Reg Ed is for information gathering. At her first IEP in South Carolina, the teacher kept saying needed life skills, such as going to a movie theater, restaurant, mall, grocery store and library. I emphatically replied that already did those things, and was well experienced in them, and didn't need reinforcement from school. The teacher then replied that was her only student that did not need these things, do would have to go along with the rest of the class, regardless. To make a long story short, did not go along the the class. She stayed at school and focused on her academics. For now, we handle the life skills at home just fine. Guest guest
Did Rick mean " life skills " as in all that junk they do in sped rooms like watch videos, learn to cook at age 5, learn to wash clothes at 6, etc? or did he mean social skills which all our kids need to be socially acceptable in a society?? I wanted academics AND social skills. needed to stay in a line like other kids, raise his hand, use a napkin, come out of the restroom clothed, etc. Elaine Re: Re: school districts In a message dated 3/10/2003 5:08:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, huie@... writes: > This is my goal too and will be my argument at Sara's next IEP meeting. > Life > >skills can be taught at home. > That's why I argued to keep my daughter out of the self contained classes (where they focus more on life skills) Cheryl in VA

So, if you (or the owner of the house/apartment that you live in) pays property taxes in Banks County then that is the school district you live in. Habersham County schools do not have to take your child - Banks County does. 2) If your child has an IEP that has determined services will be provided in a school setting then transportation should be provided as a related service. Your child is not too young to ride a bus. He simply requires a car seat. 3) Although the school does not have an obligation to allow preschool children into their afterschool program, they could transport to/from a daycare location within Banks County. Have you asked for help from the county with these issues? Do they have a social worker who assists families in the preschool/special ed program? Perhaps some creative minds working together can find a solution.
Guest guest
I don't understand why he can't ride the bus or stay in after school? If he is in public school he is entitled to the same things as other students. 3 year olds in other counties stay in after care, and ride the bus with car seats and everything. That doesn't seem to be a legal reason to me. I bet if you really push them on it you could get it. I know they have to provided car seats. Good luck. Guest guest
I lived in Habersham County from 1988-1992. It is a beautiful area! Since you are commuting to Gainesville for work, have you looked into Challenged Child? Their web address is www.challengedchild.org. Guest guest
Yes, I have checked into Challenged Child and they are sending me some info. Thanks so much for mentioning them. I am also trying to find a place in Habersham. Since we rent (haven't decided if we want to be here forever) it won't be a major thing to move. I really liked the Habersham special ed Pre-K. Nothing against Banks County. I'm sure they do a good job, I was just more impressed with Habersham. I would feel better about leaving my child with them. Thanks again for your help! -- Re: School Districts I lived in Habersham County from 1988-1992. It is a beautiful area! Guest guest
We are considering a move from Medina Co. back to Cuy. Co and are looking at the following districts: Strongsville Olmsted Falls Berea/Midd Hts We want to know the good, bad and ugly. How well did they accomodate your child or at least, how open and receptive were they? Please feel free to share programs and insights at all levels of school (elementary, middle and HS) and perhaps what to look for. We plan to take this year to really research quite a bit. ANother consideration for us is the county support (MRDD) that out kiddos on the spectrum normally get through Cuy. Co. Sidenote-East side is really not an option for us since we have an older son as well and don't want to uproot him from his current school. But we would welcome any comments about it! Thanks so much!
