News From ASO:

Possible Autism Fundraising Scam - Autism Spectrum Disorder FoundationThe Autism Society of Ohio has been contacted recently by several folks with concerns

about fundraising for an organization called the Autism Spectrum

Disorder Foundation.

The ASDF (website http://www.autismspectrumdisorderfoundation.org/

) has an Indiana address.  Apparently, they have hired a for-profit firm

to raise money for them in Ohio though a " March of Dimes " approach

where the firm calls individuals (cold calls) and asks them if they are

willing to raise money for " autism " by soliciting their neighbors to

send a check to the individual who then sends them on to the

organization.

They are not based in Ohio, and have no presence or do any work in Ohio.  The are not registered with the Ohio Secretary of State's office to do

business in Ohio.  Their website is a regurgitation of autism information available from other

sites - like the Autism Society of America's (in fact their financial

page was taken directly from the ASA's site).    They do not give any

information about the organization on their website ie. " an About Us "

page).   The address listed on their website in Indiana is actually a

UPS store.  There is no clear explanation of what the organization does

or where the money raised will go.

Autism Society national organization is aware of this organization, however, at this point there is no trademark

infringement or other actionable problems with them to date.  While the appear to do everything

" legally " they do not appear legitimate. ASO is following up

with the Ohio

Secretary of State's office about their ability to fundraise here in

Ohio.

We encourage everyone to support the autism organization of their choice - however, please make sure that the organization is legitimate and you clearly understand what the funds raised will be used for.  We also encourage you to support the Autism Society of Ohio with your donations!  If you have additional questions or need more information, please contact ASO at 614-487-4726 or email us at askASO@...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Developmental Screening Learning Collaborative Accepting Applications

Note:  This project is part of the Autism Early Screening Pilot, funded by an appropriation to the Ohio Department of Health in the 2007 Ohio Budget - securing this appropriation was a project of the Autism Society of Ohio and ASO continues to be involved with the OAAP on this project.  Contact your pediatrician's office and encourage them to participate in this Collaborative!

A first of its kind learning session designed to promote screening for developmental delays like autism is again accepting applications. The Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (OAAP) will host the Concerned About Development Learning Collaborative (CADLC), a variety of free learning activities funded through grants from the Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Concerns about development are common, with delays affecting 1 in every 8 children in Ohio. Practices like will learn how to implement a system of care that promotes early identification and referral for children with developmental concerns. Teams will also learn about the latest and most practical tools for developmental screening and how to be paid for their time and efforts.

National and state experts on screening and quality improvement will offer day long workshops, webinars, conference calls, and webcasts.  Project leaders will offer continuing support to sustain progress. Plus, CADLC project leaders will work with participants to foster better relationships with local early intervention agencies to optimize collaboration and communication for the benefit of patients and practices.

The CADLC is  applying for CME and CEU for nurses and physicians for in person and on-line activities. Additional details and the project application are available under the “parent resources” section of www.concernedaboutdevelopment.org. The first 100 practices who sign up will receive more than $450 in free screening kits, plus the satisfaction of knowing they are involved in trendsetting care that helps protect Ohio’s children.

Anyone with questions should contact concernedaboutdevelopment@... or call Dan Farkas, Project Manager, at (614) 846-6258.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

H.B.  1 Health Care Reform ProvisionsWhile autism insurance coverage did not end up being included in the latest Ohio Budget, other provisions that impact health care were included.  The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) now has a webpage constructed to assist those with questions on the recently enacted state budget (Am. Sub. H.B. 1). Included on this page are FAQs focused towards consumers and businesses as well as a link to the new Ohio Health Care Coverage and Quality Council’s website. Please follow the below link to reach ODI’s H.B.  1 Health Care Reform Provisions page.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------October 15, 2009, Columbus; October 19, 2009, Independence; October 20, 2009, Boardman - Workshop: Effective Strategies for Classroom Behavior Management

A program for K-12 teachers, administrators, and others working with difficult, defiant, unmotivated, angry, or emotionally disturbed children and adolescents in regular or special education classes or alternative schools

Presented byVality Training and Development and Dr. Holzer, BS, MA, MDAbout your instructor:  Dr. Holzer is an experienced public school teacher as well as a psychiatrist with extensive experience working with troubled students in schools. At present, Dr. Holzer is a behavior analyst in a school district in Mississippi, working with a student population of extreme-at-risk students. He is fully aware of the challenges teachers face. He brings his extensive personal experience as a teacher and his medical expertise to this program as well as his experience working as a consultant to educators.

Teachers recognize that there are more students with behavior problems in our classrooms today than in years past and that many of the problems seem more severe. Most teachers were not trained to deal with these problems, or with the fact that frequently they find two, three, or even more students with serious behavior problems in one classroom.

In this workshop Dr. Holzer, offers evidence-based strategies to work with difficult, defiant, unmotivated, angry, and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents. This program will provide you with strategies to enhance learning, build self-esteem, and control disruptive and otherwise troublesome behavior.

We will discuss the causes of these problems (conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, depression and bipolar disorder, bullying, societal violence, parental mismanagement, among others) and, on this foundation, build practical strategies to maintain behavioral control and teach effectively.

Please join us for this timely, informative workshop. We know you are busy. Join us and we will make good use of your time. You can expect to return to your school with practical tools. And we know that, to be practical, management strategies have to be cost effective in terms of time so Dr. Holzer will stress effective brief intervention techniques in day-to-day behavior management. Over 97% of our participants say this program “met” or “exceeded” expectations.
