The desens process was way easier than i expected, and while i never considered doing it on my own, know that i have been through it I could see how people do. again i only have the experience of myself and the other 3 people who desens. at the session i did. It was a 2 day process. You start with 1/2 a baby aspirin, and iof yiou have no response you go to a full one in 3 hours. Dr. Baso has a very definate protocol and is confident in the process. # of us in the process all reacted to either 1 baby aspirin and the other 2 folks rreacted at 2 aspirins. the 4th person never reacted, and realized she had other problems that were label Samter's. When you react you get trated. Inb my case i got benedryl and nasal spray and a breathing treatment. it was a very slight reaction as Dr Basso intervene as soon as he sees evidence of reaction. Every hour we measure our air flow both volume and peak flow as well as oxygenin the blood. These are simple non

invasive teats. If you react then you get the same dose at the 3 hour mark. If no reaction you go to a higher dose. We all 3 reacted once and then none of us eacted again and by 2PM day 2 we were taking 2 adult aspirins apiece. Mostly you ar sitting around in a room with a few other Samter's folks just waiting for the next dose, sharing stories and either reading or one fellow brought a lap top and watched DVD's. As far as i understand insurance is covering this. They certainly covered my visit to him initially. It is done at NYack Hospital, but we stay in the 2 rooms he uses and we have a nurse who is always checking up wioth us. We have an IV in our hand incase we need to be hooked up, and we all did during our 1 reaction as he gives benedry intravenously. We all nodded out during that. You don't stay in the hospital at night. # of us stayed in a nearby motel, and then you go t the hospital at 6:30 AM the first day and 7AM the second day. You may have to

take a cab if you have had the benedryl. Again it was easier than I expected, and as I am still on prednisone 5mg every other day for 2 more weks it is hard for me to evaluate the sucess in terms of controlling SAmter's and especuially swollwn tissue in the nose and fast growing polyps, but i am hopeful as my sense of smell is betr since the desens ended and that is only 2 days ago. I did bang my foot playing with my childrem last night and it imediately went black and blue . i believe the bleeding issue as well as stomach issues are the main detriment to regular aspirin, but after 20+ years with Samters, these seem less important than the comfort of breathing unobstructed. If you have more questions please ask. As many of you probably have, I've seen many doctors over the years. Dr. Basso scored many points in my book by being a real and genuine person during the whole process. As the days unfolded i realized he was giving 2 complete work days to take the 4 of

us through the desens process. I'm sure there is more money in his regular allergy practice, and it was refreshing to see his committment to understanding Samter's and helping us deal with it. I hope that everything continues to go well for you. I guess that I have a lot of

questions I hope that you don't mind answering a few- How long does the whole process last? I am thinking 2 days but it might vary by the individual. Is it done in an outpatient setting? If so, do you need to stay nearby? This one may be difficult-and I am sure that it depends on each person's plan but does insurance cover this treatment or do they consider it "experimental"? Once again, all the best and thanks! Fine <gmmf5 > wrote: I am in day one of the process now. So far it is way more gentle than anything I expected. I took a 1/2 of a baby aspirin today then 3 hours later 1 baby aspirin. I had some wheezing, very little and some sinus swelling, again a little. They gave me a breathing treatment and intravenous benedryl so then I

noddded out a bit. I was reading but the benedry lays you low. there is another fellow in the room who didn't have a reaction with an aspirin and a half so three hours later he got 2 baby aspirin and then he recieved a treatment specific for his syptoms, stomach pain and red itchy eyes. Tommorrow i go for 2 baby aspirin and then more. I sure hope this is effective. Dr Basso appears to be genial, caring and competent. Let's see what i say after day 2. .Stefano Henriko <skunkburner (DOT) co.uk> wrote: Nice to have you here & welcome.I guess you can read through the archives to catch up on desense and checkout the files

section. Newbie-Aspirin Desensitization I just found this group and I am so relieved to find that I am not alone. I have suffered from this disease for over 30 years and thought that I was the only one. I just had my 3rd polyp surgery a couple of weeks ago and this was the first time that I ever heard of aspirin desensitization. I am trying to get as much info as possible so I can make an informed decision as to whether or not to try this. I am not really sure if I understand how it works. I would love to hear from anyone who has actually undergone this- especially anyone who has done this with Dr

Bosso. I would also like to find out about the food connection-ie foods that should be avoided because they contain salicytes or any other diet suggestions. Thanks to anyone who can help!
