Guest guest
Congrats! I'm glad that worked out for you, finally! I am aspirin desensitized!! Hello, Well, as I have been explaining for months, I was unable to find anyone to handle my aspirin desens. Until, I found the Parkes Clinic in Rochester NY. The doc had me come back several weeks as he gave me increasing doses of baby aspirin. Three weeks later, I can tolerate 650mg of aspirin twice daily. He looked up my nose and noticed that my poyps were GONE!. I am now wheening off the prednisone. I am already off the singulair. Everything is going well. Do the aspirin challenge if you have Samter's. It is worth it. I started out with one 81mg tablet twice a day for a week. Then two tablets 2x for a week........ ... and so on until 8-81 mg. 2x daily without a reaction. Still don't have any smell but am hopefull it will return shortly. My other symtoms such as stuffy nose, inflammed sinuses, constant headache- ------ are all getting better. Good luck to all, Dan
Guest guest
This is good news. Some months ago a person had posted that they had previously gone through the desens process but their polyps still remained. Your experience will make me reconsider the desens process. Guest guest
That's great. I have a consult w/ a doctor on Thursday to find out if I am a candidate. Question though...why wouldn't you attribute your polyps being gone to the prednisone? When I take prednisone my polyps shrink up. Did you still have them on prednisone? thanks, Stacey in MA -------------- Original message -------------- From: "dm.teal1" <dm.teal1@...> Hello,Well, as I have been explaining for months, I was unable to find anyone to handle my aspirin desens. Everything is going well. Being on Prednisone alleviates many Samters symptoms. It is not necessarily a surpise that the polyps have disappeared if you were taking Prednisone. > Do the aspirin challenge if you have Samter's. It is worth it. Absolutely. > I started out with one 81mg tablet twice a day for a week. Then two > tablets 2x for a week........... and so on until 8-81 mg. 2x daily > without a reaction. Being on Prednisone increases the tolerance to aspirin. That is probably why you were able to take 81mg at the start. Most people here would not have started at that relatively high level. It will be interesting to see how your symptoms respond once you are weaned from Prednisone. > Still don't have any smell but am hopefull it will return shortly. Most reports of success with desensitization (by itself) do not include long-term return of sense of smell.
Guest guest
I've been " desensed " twice to no effect. My doctor therefore assumes I don't have " classic " samters but something else. A recent mucus culture (he sucked mucus out my nose and grew bacteria in it) showed high levels of klebsiella so he put me on a 1-month supply of levaquin. I'm also on Zyflo, Omnaris (new nasal spray by Sepracor) and Mucinex as well as daily nasal irrigation (2x/day) of alkalol followed by genamycin though I'm told alkalol is bad for some people so far no problems. as a wise person on this board once said: irrigate, irrigate, irrigate! > > That's great. Guest guest
Looking up one's nose does not give a guarantee that the polyps are gone, because no one can see into all of the sinuses by looking up the nose. However, aspirin desensitization will hopefully shrink the polyps to a much smaller size, and more importantly, slow down the growth of polyps. That is what can be hoped for with aspirin desensitization. Lori > > This is good news. Guest guest
Hi, Well, that's what I thought. I have been on pred. for months and grew new polyps after my first surgery. So, after my second surgery, the doc was not supprised to see more polyps growing---------- even though it was only two months since surgery -------- and on 15mg of pred. all the time! The aspirin desens is going great. Can smell, taste, and Breath!. I am spraying sinuses in the morning with Afrin and following it up with a dose of Qvar up the nose. The Qvar allow continued daily use of the Afrin without side effects. Good luck, Dan Re: I am aspirin desensitized!! That's great. Guest guest
Dan, What is Qvar? I also spray daily with Afrin and have for years. I know this is one of the worst things you can do, but I rather like breathing. I think breathing is really underated! Anyway, my doc is forever telling me that the daily Afrin spraying is harmful, but I am addicted and just can not stop. Even when I have suffered through Afrin withdrawal, I just can not breath effectively without the Afrin. What is Qvar? Guest guest
QVAR® is a pressurized metered-dose inhaler that is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma.1 QVAR® contains HFA beclomethasone dipropionate in a solution rather than suspension, which in combination with improved inhaler technology, produces an extrafine aerosol with a mass median aerodynamic diameter of 1.1 μm.2 Qvar Re: I am aspirin desensitized!! samters Date: Saturday, May 31, 2008, 10:25 AM Hi, Well, that's what I thought. Guest guest
If I want an instant sinus infection, I use Afrin! Get off that stuff! When you stop using it, your symptoms will get really bad for about 2 days, but then you will breathe again, with less infections. Just speaking from a little experience, that's all.
