The unknown can be scary. I upped my dose today from 80 mg (several days at 80mg) to 160 mg. I had a pretty strong reaction about 5 hours later. No breathing problems, but I got numb and tingly in my face around the eyes and nose area with slight itching in my mouth. My nose flared up and is now blocked. All symptoms have gone down considerably now except for the nasal blockage on both sides.I think I have avoided an trip to the ER, so far. I took all the meds necessary to treat reaction. Question is, do I take 160 mg again tomorrow?

If you are OK with "some suffering", then, assemble your puffers and anti-histimines and whatever, and have someone at hand in case you need assistance or a drive to thehosptial, and do it yourself in a day or 2, as have several others here. What your doctor has you doing is total nonsense. I did the desense back in the 1989 when it was way different. My doctor didn't allow any antihistamines or even my rescue inhaler. I did it all just raw. I was done by the second day but I was just totally exhausted. His reasoning was that the other meds might mask the reaction and he wouldn't know when I was getting close to collapse. Well, felt like I was right on the edge the entire time. Ugh... Don't want to do that again....

Just make sure you have inhalers and benadryl handy. Many of us took prednisone and a leukotriene inhibitor before and during desensitizing to make the process more manageable. Also be sure to have someone on hand to assist you and get you to medical help if necessary. Once you pass through the reaction you should be fine.

Good luck.

Thank you for the input. I am on day 3 at 80 mg. So far, with taking my meds (benadryl, xopenex every 4 hours) I have not had any problems. I think my post nasal drip has pretty much stopped. I am also Oil Pulling. I think I will go to 120mg in a day or two from now....and go from there....

Wow. Sounds harsh. Did you gain any benefits of getting desensitized?

Yes but it was short lived. I felt as though my asthma calmed a little and the sinus seemed to clear a bit. However, since I was in need of a polyp surgery, within 5 months I was off for the surgery. Then when I was told I had to go through all that again to get back on the aspirin, it was just more than I could handle. I have been considering going back and doing again since I feel so good after the surgery I had in April. However, I don't have insurance and it is pretty danged expensive.

I just saw my ortho for an old hand injury and when he mentioned surgery, I was like NO THANK YOU because I too did not want to go thru this process AGAIN so soon!!!I hear you about the cost of this. I have yet to see what my insurance will be billed for the 4 hours I sat there after being given 40 mg of aspirin. My 'usual' appointments are billed at $600 !!!! I cannot wait to see my doctor's face when I go in there on the 25th and am de-sensitized at 600mg and she will not get to charge one penny for it! Ha!I came across a doctor who gives TONS of info on chronic sinusitis. He has some goodstuff and he himself has suffered from this so he has an unusual perspective and compassion. He gives lots of suggestions on things to do. You may want to check it out.http://www.sinuses.com/I also reached out to other alternatives when the conventional meds were not necessarily working and very expensive. I never thought I would do this but to be honest, it has been helpful. It is from Ayurverdic medicine and it is called Oil Pulling. You swish cold pressed sesame oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes daily. I buy a bottle of it (light golden yellow in color) for $7 at a local health store. If you want more information, let me know. You can also read about it at oilpulling.com One of the things about the oil pulling is I have read many testimonies and some people say their symptoms got worse as they detoxed their bodies before they felt better. I wouldn't say I felt worse before I felt better, but I sure coughed up a bunch of white foamy mucous in the beginning. It was the most productive cough I ever had and in a

few days it cleared. I wonder if that is the case with desensitizing with aspirin? I have read that it can take up to 6 months before you receive the full benefits of being de-sensitized. Can anyone testify to that? From: q2 <kenwest@...>Subject: Re: Calling all folks who have had aspirin desensitization.....samters Date: Friday, August 12, 2011, 12:58 PM

Hi ,

If you need surgery then dont be too anxious about going off/down aspirin. I've had 2 surgeries since I was initially desens - one sinus and one on my leg. Both times, 2 weeks before the op I'd drop straight from my 600mg to 75mg aspirin/day (here 75mg is 1 baby aspirin) I stayed on this daily dose of 75mg aspirin for the 2 weeks (just taking a couple of days of 10mg pred as I noticed a mild reaction after a week)

Then the day of the op, no aspirin. Then the day after the op, 75mg, and then up your doses as you are now. I've been fine both times and within 2 weeks or less I'm back up to 600mg.

Both surgeons have said they are fine operating when I've had 75mg/day aspirin and my vv op, which could have been messy, was fine with no undue blood loss.

Good luck :-)

Becky
