re aspirin desensitization

Tried this before ie 1300 mg asa daily but had gastric irritation and

discontinued.Wonder if

many people are taking routine stomach meds ie.proton pump inhibitors with their

daily

aspirin and if this is a wise thing to do??. I thought a baby asa a day would

give some CV

benefit and help with the Samters.I tried the 81mg asa daily but this didn't

seem to help with

my symptoms.The 81 mg asa is what my allergist desensitized me to,.Discontinued

asa

completely for a month or more and now too much mucous ,post nasal drip very

nauseated

in morning..Seen the article saying as little as 300mg asa would help with nasal

polyps.Willing to try the asa desensitization again but wonder what level of asa

is best for

me.I will try 325 mg daily and go from there.Tried a 5 day course of oral

prednisone 50mg

daily but it didn't do much.I probably have so many chronic changes that the

prednisone

didn't shrink much of anything ie calcific change,mucousal thickening and

scarring etc.Post

nasal drip seems to cause a lot of problems for me. Is the 1300 mg asa daily

necessary to

control this or is 325mg enough??

I had the procedure done just over a month ago and my allergist

suggested that if I had any stomach issues with the aspirin to take a

pepcid or maalox prior to the dosage. I neglected to do either,

because I am allergic to pepcid.

It might sound strange, but what I found works best for me at 1300 mg

was the following:

1. Eat half an English muffin w/ real butter

2. Take half the aspirin

3. Eat the second half of the muffin

4. Take the final dosage and was it down with a 1/4 cup of goats milk

My desensitization was done a year and a half ago. It is my understanding that you should not have any further allergic reaction to asa if the desens. was successful. I found that after day 2 of the desens., once they got me up to a higher dosage of aspirin. I stopped reacting. During the desens. process, if you are truly allergic to aspirin, you will get a reaction. You stay at the dosage of aspirin you had the reaction at until the reaction passess and then they take you up higher. I reacted at 200 mgs. and stayed there for the next 2 doses of asa. until the reaction passed. I now live on 750mgs. or more a day. It has successfully kept the polyps at bay, but I now have to be rechecked as I am still fighting a very nasty sinus infection for over 2 months. Not sure what is going on.

I did my desens back in May of this year and remain on 1300 mg ASA

daily. The allergist that I worked with followed the Scripts

protocols. If I understand the physical process associated with ASA

desens, the purpose of the process is to deplete the MAST cells. This

occurs during the initial desens. My day one was a horrible

experience of only some mild respiratory distress, but with hives such

that my hives had hives.

Once the MAST cells are depleted, the daily dosage must be enough to

keep the MAST cells depleted and thereby eliminate the reaction. If

you do not maintain a high enough dosage or suspend the taking of

aspirin, the the MAST cells replenish and the allergic reaction either

continues to occur or begins anew.

My allergist required that I sign a consent form that clearly stated

that if I chose to stop taking the aspirin for a non-medical reason,

that I understood that he would not perform the desens a second time.

As far as stomach issues, I take Nexium 40 mg in the evening, and 150

mg of Zantac in the morning and so far I've had minimal problems.

As far as the effectiveness of the desens, this remains to be seen.

My sense of smell seems to be starting to return, but at this point

only minimally, my asthma was well controlled before the desens and

I've not seen any change in that. My polyps, which are my major

problem, have generally taken about 15 - 18 months to regrow, so the

jury is still out.

Hi Jane,

Two months of infection is nasty indeed ; a germ culture and some tough

treatment would not be a luxury. The last infection I let go for 2

months (because of useless first-line antibiotics) got me a pneumonia

that took a good round of Ketek and nebulized dexmethasone to clear (and

after that, 2 months to stop coughing).
