Guest guest
I don't think there's many medications out there I haven't tried after all these years and unfortunately only gained short term relief from Singuliar. I've seen several ENT's, allergists etc. over the years too. About the only medication I find that gives results aside from ventolin is prednisone and long term on that unfortunately isn't a healthy choice. samters From: compumania@...Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2011 01:31:53 +0000Subject: Re: How I got relief Your Welcome .I'm glad to hear that you have found some relief with your homemade nasal spray. That is definitely something that can help those with Samters.Have you ever tried Singulair? It can really help in 2 ways. One, you should find that it helps reduce the frequency of your asthma attacks. Another, because it blocks leukotreines, that is something that helps those with Samters. It could take several weeks until it builds up in your system to a point where you feel a difference. I would 1st read all the drug warnings and then decide if it is worth trying. I was on it for about 2 years without any side effects but still got the occasional sinus infection. However, I did not have the nightly coughs and wheezing anymore which would only subside by a hot drink or using an inhaler. As I mentioned before, I now avoid wines and other high or very high Salicylate foods, drinks, and products so I have been able to stay off Singulair for the last 2 years. Here is a great read for you in regards to what I said above. After I found this post, I began taking Singulair and it did improve my symptoms considerably.http://personal.ecu.edu/wuenschk/Leukotrienes.htm--- In samters , Celtic Dove <celtic_dove@...> wrote:>> > > > > Hi and thanks for all the information you've posted here.> > As some of us have unfortunately learned, there are people who have been helped by this diet and others who haven't. Guest guest
I'm glad to hear that you are well aware of the very negative side effects of prednisone. I took it several years ago (tapered doses about twice/year) and it gave me about 1 month of relief including the return of my sense of smell and taste. It has been about 5 years since I've taken it and I don't plan on ever using it again. Obviously, we are all different and certain things may not work as well for others. I was really hoping Singulair would have done more for you. Have you looked into Zyflo? As you know, nasal polyps usually grow back after surgery, and the size grows back after a dose of prednisone. You may want to look at Castor Oil applied to the exterior of your nose + 1 Tsp/day internally for a couple of weeks to help shrink nasal polyps. Also consider diluted organic Apple Cider Vinegar as I mentioned before. Then there is aspirin desensitization. I really hope you remain positive and that something I mentioned will work for you. > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi and thanks for all the information you've posted here. > > > > As some of us have unfortunately learned, there are people who have been helped by this diet and others who haven't. Guest guest
Hello I have three questions: How do you exactly use Castor oil and/or apple cider vinegar? With the aim of shrinking polyps? Also, do many of you suffer from middle ear infections (otitis), temporary or permanent reduced hearing and pnemonia? Recently, I’ve been having a lot of midlle ear infections, bad ear aches, also pnemonia… Lots and lots of antibiotics… From: samters [mailto:samters ] On Behalf Of jc_44 Sent: Monday, July 25, 2011 3:46 PM samters Subject: Re: How I got relief I'm glad to hear that you are well aware of the very negative side effects of prednisone. Guest guest
Hello, I have not yet tried either Castor oil or organic Apple Cider Vinegar. In this original post, I mentioned that I found an interesting website: http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/sinus_polyps.html It mentions to apply Castor Oil externally on your nose and to take 1 tsp per day for a short period of time. You can also find all the benefits for Apple Cider Vinegar on that site which includes allergies, sinus infections, etc. http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html Take ACV diluted or it could ruin your teeth. No, I do not suffer from any middle ear infections. I would think it is to do with fluid build up. You can try the same website for something that may help but check with your doctor. http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/earache.html It seems that ACV can help but the #1 remedy is Hydrogen Peroxide but please read the warnings. I don't know if I would try it. There are other things mentioned that you could try first. Good Luck. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi and thanks for all the information you've posted here. > > > > > > As some of us have unfortunately learned, there are people who have been > helped by this diet and others who haven't. Guest guest
Hi JC: I've been on low salicylate diet for 3-years. I only recently discovered that I was eating high doses of histamine containing foods which cause congestion and increased asthma symptoms. Wine is very high in histamines. There is quite a bit of overlap between salicylate and histamine containing foods. Have you tried baby shampoo in your rinse? I got back my SOS within 1/2 a day of starting. http://sun1.awardspace.com/Conditions/Solar_Urticaria/histamine_diet.htm http://www.foodallergytalk.com/histaminediet.htm > > This is my first post. Guest guest
Hello, That is really interesting info you provided, Thanks! You are right about the overlap between several salicylate and histamine containing foods. I think the difference to keep in mind is with Samters, the person would also have a history of nasal polyps. Therefore being on a low salicylate diet should be a starting point. The histamine containing foods chart would probably help as well but I think it was tailored to non-Samters allergy sufferers. However, the information is very good, especially the part about wines, and has me thinking about following this chart as well. Will there be any food left that we can safely eat ;^) You mentioned about baby shampoo in my rinse. I am assuming that you were able to get your sense of smell back after 1/2 day of starting to use baby shampoo and following the histamine restricted diet. That would be amazing. By following the steps I previously mentioned in my 1st post, I can usually breathe through my nose quite well, but still have difficulty smelling and tasting anything for the last year. When I was on Singulair and Cortisone Nasal Sprays a couple of years ago, I was able to smell and taste for about 6 months but lost it within a few months after stopping both medicines. I think it is probably because my nasal polyps probably grew back a little in size. I have not been checked for nasal polyps in over 10 years since my last surgery....I just don't want to know. I do know that nasal polyps usually grow back and that one usually finds relief for only a short time after they are removed so having another nasal polyp removal surgery is not on my list of things to do. I know that Prednisone will get my SOS back but is it worth the risk? I would rather go back on Singulair and nasal sprays first. > > > > This is my first post. Guest guest
Hi JC I've had Samters for about 7-years, was diagnosed 4-years ago and had surgery 3.5-years ago. Since surgery, I've had 2 prednisone 6-packs to open the sinus' and sleep better. My SOS has been very hit and miss, usually coming back for a time after a short course of Prednisone. Since the Sampters diagnosis, I have been on a low salicylate diet. From what I understand from papers linked to from this site, there is no significant evidence that low salicylate diets actually help. Recently, I saw a new allergy/asthma specialist who also teaches at Stanford and UCSF. He said that he did not believe the low salicylate diet was worth the effort. When I told him that I noticed a big change with tomato's, red wine and strawberries, he said that they are loaded with histamines to the point of acting like a drug. Then, I figured out that I was eating a ton of the top 2 histamine foods: sauerkraut (I started making my own about three-months ago and mt asthma started getting a bit worse then) and canned tuna. This new doc confirmed what I read here that baby shampoo sinus rinse helps to keep bacteriological activity down, so I started that as well. I'm sure the shampoo had the immediate effect of restoring SOS because it obviously cleared a bunch of gunk out the first couple times and I'm not making yellow snot anymore. The new doc also said that I likely had a chronic low-grade sinus infection which can increase asthma symptoms, and he put me on a course of antibiotics. He said that getting the polyps under control is a key to better breathing. The histamines increase the inflammatory response and likely increases polyp and infection problems. Singulair did not work for me and Zyflo is way too expensive. I'm just on standard asthma inhalers and flonase nose spray. I've had a similar experience with the nose spray. Last year, there was a flonase shortage and I went without for about 1-week. This caused a polyp growth surge and I lost my SOS and was more clogged up at night. 6-months later, I did my second Prednisone 6-pack. Another thing I try to do every morning are deep breathing exercises. I met an Indian guy on an airplane and he told me about Baba Ramdev. I think he is the , Weil and Pat on of India all rolled into one. I'm sure he is a scam artist, his video is kinda hokey and strange, but his exercises are very good. He is all over youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_Jnra2O9Fc & feature=relmfu Good Luck! > > > > > > This is my first post. Guest guest
How do I do the baby shampoo rinses? I developed polyps after having my daughter 4 yrs ago, not sure why and doctor keeps giving me same stupid prescription that does nothing to reduce the polyps. I found some kind of strong medication at 7-11 that makes them go away, but can't use more than 3 days in a row. Guest guest
Hello, I have never tried the baby shampoo rinses. Someone mentioned it in a reply to my post but I was able to find a link for you that provides how to do it. Just add 1 teaspoon of baby shampoo to a nasal rinse bottle. http://otolaryngology.posterous.com/baby-shampoo-used-to-treat-chronic-sinusitis Can you tell me the name of the strong medication you found that makes polyps go away? > > How do I do the baby shampoo rinses? Guest guest
A teaspoon of baby shampoo may be too much, and may really irritate your sinus tissue. Try starting with a drop or two in your sinus rinse bottle. > >> > >> How do I do the baby shampoo rinses? Guest guest
The soap concentration isn't supposed to be more than 1% . More than that hurts.CrusherFrom: stuffyintexas <stuffyintexas@...>samters Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 8:48 AMSubject: Re: How I got relief A teaspoon of baby shampoo may be too much, and may really irritate your sinus tissue.
