Guest guest
Hi I too have no SOS and never recovered it after surgery. I took Predisolone about 4 or 5 tabs (cant remember what dose per tab - is it 10mg). I had to wean off before they would do Polyp op. I took so much of the awful stuff, and I took for more than 6 months, it relieved the misery of the nasal drip and the discomfort that comes with having huge polyps and asthma! About 4 months after surgery I started to throw up after every meal I took and thought at first it was the salicylate intolerance but after getting down to eating nothing but chicken and rice and was still throwing up began worrying. I was actually taken into hospital via A & E and diagnosed with Pancreatitus. This is what people who drink and dont take care of themselves get. I recovered after rest and being starved just given lots of fluid as I was severely dehydrated. It was a panicky experience and the doctors could only say that it could have been caused by the steriods. This is such a strange condition. I myself have only had the one op yet have as above not had any SOS since. I react badly to alcohol and dont have tea or coffee anymore although some food stuff is fine one day and the next I will react eg chilli and spices (I dont have often) It seems to depend also how tired I am and how I feel in general. I have also had bouts of extreme tiredness that seem to come from nowhere. Will anyone ever sort it out with research ...most health professionals have not even heard of Samters! Wishes from a new poster Ann x From: rdawson5656 <rdawson5656@...>Subject: SOS and steroid burstssamters Date: Wednesday, 18 May, 2011, 8:44 Hello everyone, I had a polypectomy and ancillary sinus surgery in April last year.My SOS returned within about seven days and lasted until December when it went away again.I do find this very frustrating as my asthma and rhinitis are reasonably well-controlled by using a steroid inhaler and Nasonex for my nose.I also take daily loratadine. However what I have found is that a short burst of prednisolone (40 mg per day for five days) does bring my SOS back for about 4 weeks after completion of the course. My GP has not as yet raised any issue with prescribing three times so far this year.I appreciate that prolonged use of steroids can be dangerous but I am wondering what advice other posters may have received here. I suppose what I'm saying is that if I were to take say six or seven such bursts of prednisolone each year would this be safe and give my adrenal glands sufficient time to recover each time?If not then how many such steroid bursts would be acceptable.Any comments would be gratefully received,Regards,
Guest guest
I am very careful with systemic steroids. My father was on them for many years (sometimes a regular low dose, and sometimes in bursts) and has MANY complications now in which the steroids played a part. For myself, I feel pretty cruddy when I have to take steroids. Muscle pain, irritability, etc. I was taking bursts multiple times per year prior to ASA desensitization. Since then (2 years ago) I've only needed steroids once for an asthma flare that occurred with forest fires in the area. I would look into ASA desense rather than relying on regular bursts of steroids. I was able to gradually reduce my aspirin dose to 325mg/day by 18mo post desense with no recurrence of polyps. You don't have to stay at 1300mg forever.
