Guest guest
Hi , I tend to notice a beneficial effect by about a week after starting taking it. I recently stopped taking it for just over a week and then started to get significant asthma, especially at night, so I started back up with it again and am just noticing an improvement 1 week in. So hopefully only a couple of days or so you for. Guest guest
I think it takes about 2-4 weeks for it to really show benefits. If I stop taking it, asthma distress starts showing up in about a week. Hang in there!Billie Ford msbfford@... Guest guest
becky, Why did you stop? I stopped about 4 days ago because of the depression conversation on the blog and I wanted to see if it would help to lift the depression that I have. Guest guest
Me too! I stopped immediately as i was feeling very low, but actually my short term away from it only brought on asthma and no better peace of mind. Today i feel more positive than I have in a long while, yet I've been back on it for 4 days again. I have to be honest and say that for me i don't think Montelukast gives me nightmares or depression/suicidal thoughts..I think these things happen because of life and what's happening in it! Good luck with lifting your depression. Do let us know if you feel any better after being off it a while. Maybe a change to Zafirlukast may help. Guest guest
I'm not sure what effects you are looking for from Singulair. As said many times, we all react differently to different drugs. I take two 10mg Singulair pills at bedtime. I have been on this dose for 3+ years now. I never noticed any reaction to taking the Singulair. It may be because, when tested, I had NO allergies. As told by my allergist, who is familiar with Samters, the Singulair is to inhibit the growth of new polyps. After 3 previous polyp surgeries(the last two surgeries were 11 months apart), it appears that for 3+ years Singulair is doing what it was prescribed for. Guest guest
I am now 12 days in with my use of Singulair.I must admit to some disappointment. If anything, the only noticeable effect is that my asthma is slightly less well controlled than when using Salmeterol. If ,as has been postulated ,the effects of Samters are produced by a leukotriene cascade then surely using a leukotriene blocker like Singulair should give relief. This does not appear to be happening in my case.I wonder how long I should wait before going back to my GP. > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > >
Guest guest
At the very least i would phone your physician and ask this question. He is the only one that can tell you what and when any affects of Singulair should be apparent. In my case, since Singulair was ONLY prescribed to prevent polyp growth, I guess I had to wait a year or more to see if Singulair was successful. In your case, it may have been prescribed for an entirely different reason that only your physician would know. Ask the question and maybe it will only take a simple phone call back to put your mind at ease. It is never right to go along with ANY course of treatment without knowing what to expect. > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
In my case, I tried Singulair every day for about 5 or 6 weeks and I did not see any effect. I told my ENT and he advised me to stop.
Guest guest
I've been taking it now since April and I don't see any improvement. My ENT says it will help prevent the regrowth, so I'm going to just take it for the next year and see if the polyps begin to grow back. Guest guest
, I think I published a long time ago an abstract saying that about a quarter to a third of patients are refractory to Montelukast (Singulair) because of genetic polymorphisms. This is why it is advised to use a trial-and-error approach to such drugs. > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Thank Asfy,it's now 3 weeks and no discernible effect.I seem to be one of the ones for whom it doesn't work. > > > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
I too noticed no effect with singular. Even after aspirin desentisation my asthma was still not under control. I asked my doctor to perscribe Zyflo Cr and after a short time of use my asthma was brought under control. My experience is that many doctors have no experience in perscribing it; because singular is cheaper, easier to take ( one pill a day instead of four), and has less side effects (zyflo can elevate liver enzymes and requires periodic blood tests). My understanding however is that zyflo works by a slightly different pathway and so people who dont respond to singular may respond to zyflo. I posted a study on zyflo and samters in the files section. > > > > > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Thanks .I wonder if any other posters have been unsuccessful with Singulair but have had success with Accolate or Zyflo.Unfortunately I don't think Zyflo is available in the UK > > > > > > > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
I had no good or bad effects from Singulair. Some people consider it the Miracle drug, but for me, nothing. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I mentioned in another thread that my GP has put me on Singulair to see how I get on with this. > > > > > > > I have been on it for five days and have not yet noticed any change. > > > > > > > How long has it been before other posters have noticed an effect with this drug? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Been using it since April. Nothing good or bad. I took it for a year in 2009 because it is supposed to help delay the polyps growth. Unfortunately for me, that didn't happen either. Guest guest
I know that Zyflo is available only in the states and even here it is not widely used. And it is a fear of mine that it could be taken of the market at any time. If it was I probably would look at Boswellia which is a natural medicine ,but is the only substance that seems to have a similar mode of action. My lay understanding is with samters we have an over production of leukotrienes. Accolate and singular work by blocking leukotrienes while zyflo inhibits leukotriene formation. IIT may be worth visiting a Anthroposophical or Holistic medical Doctor who has experience with this herb? From Wikipedia Zileuton (trade name ZYFLO) is an orally active inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase, and thus inhibits leukotrienes (LTB4, LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4) formation. Zileuton is used for the maintenance treatment of asthma. Related compounds include montelukast (Singulair) and zafirlukast (Accolate). These two compounds are leukotriene receptor antagonists which block the action of specific leukotrienes, while zileuton inhibits leukotriene formation. Studies that show Boswellia reduces asthma and is a INHIBITOR of 5-LIPOXYGENASE A 6-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 80 people with relatively mild asthma found that treatment with boswellia at a dose of 300 mg 3 times daily reduced the frequency of asthma attacks and improved objective measurements of breathing capacity.1 1 Gupta I, Gupta V, Parihar A, et al. Guest guest
I had zero benefit from singulair. Within days of taking zyflo, my sense of smell started to come back (note: started, as I started zyflo at the same time as aspirin desense, and it seems the only time it is really back is after a predisone pulse - then only sticks around for a month or so), nose stopped running like a faucet. Could breathe through my nose again (no more of the awful mouth breathing). I am a believer in zyflo. I was very upset (and stockpiled) when the regular zyflo went out of distribution, as zyflo cr did not work as well for me. I'm about 2 weeks from running out of my zyflo stockpile, and am hoping that since I am more stable, the zyflo cr will work.
