Wow, this sounds awful - you poor thing. Nope, I had an operation last week on my leg, and pain meds work for me, although i can only have paracetamol and codiene - they do help with pain. What an awful time you had :-(

I haven't posted here in awhile other then to say that my Samters seems to be under control with doses of Singulair, Nasonex, Asmonex, and Loratidien. In any case, when I was younger I raced motorcycles and manages to break several bones and have other injuries in the process. Back at that time, I was given the usual pain meds like Darvon, Dilauded, and a few others. Each of these had minimal, if any, affect on me, which I figure was just normal at the time.Recently I had a major eight hour back operation where they inserted titanium bolts and rods to hold things back together. Apparently when strapping me down for the operation, they broke a rib on my left side. When I woke up after the operation, the pain was pretty intense. Besides laying on my back, which had just been sliced open, I could hardly breath because of the broken rib. The attending nurse asked my pain level on a scale of one to ten. I told her that it was an eleven. She

gave me an injection of morphine and said everything would ease off in a short time. Well, to make a long story shorter, the pain DID NOT decrease. I told the nurse that the pain was still there and had not decreased at all and she gave me another injection of morphine. Again, no affect, nothing at all. The injections did not even make me drowsy. They were monitoring my vitals on a continuous basis and they could see no change from the meds. The nurse consulted a doctor and that is when the fun began. I was put on morphine injections every few hours and they then tried Percocet, Demerol, Oxycodone, and a new pain med called Nucynta, in addition to the morphine. All of them had the same non-affect on my pain and they could not believe that my vitals were not changing either. By now it had been probably eight to ten hours after my operation and the intense pain had prevented any sleep at all. They then decided to try some sleeping pills. I don't know the

specific type. Again no affect and the doctors/nurses had trouble with the fact that my vitals were not changing at all from these meds. Naturally, because of my Samters, anti-inflammatory drugs were out of the question also. Finally they concluded that for whatever reason, they did not have any drug that could give me relief and that they had gotten very close to fatal dose levels. I spent four days in the hospital bed without getting any sleep that I remember before they sent me home, without a prescription for pain medications. The next month of recovery was without a doubt the most uncomfortable time of my life. I finally started to get a few hours of sleep during the day and eventually things started to get back to normal. It has now been about 7 months since my operation and although I do have some pain, it is getting better and is easily bearable. My question is.......is this normal? Have other Samter's patients also not had any affect

from pain medications, or sleeping pills? I am trying to find out if this is part of Samter's symptoms or is this something entirely different and unrelated. My doctors are puzzled and, were it not for the evidence from my vitals, I am not sure that they believed me when I kept telling them they pain was still present. I know people are willing to pay big bucks for Oxycodone to feel whatever it is they feel when they take the drug. To me, I may as well be eating an M & M since it does nothing for me. Anyone else have a similar problem?

Wow, Percocet and demerol work for me.

However, I had spinal meningitis about 10 yrs ago and Morphine (2 doses) did not ease my pain. Doctors were very surprised.

Good luck, Stacey

Ye, I thought it was just me. The last polyp surgery that I had was terrible. They gave me Percoset, Demerol, and 2 other pain meds and non of the worked for me. I tore the cornea in my eye and they gave me Oxycontin and it had no impact on my pain. When I have terrible sinus headaches at night I can take the Target PM and it helps and I am able to sleep.Gwendolyn RafterFrom: & Stacey Sutela <sutela@...>Subject: Re: I have Samters but is this part of it also?samters Date: Friday, February 11, 2011, 1:55 PM

I've had three polyp surgeries, including the first one that took care of

fixing some damage done because of a prior broken nose. After those surgeries,

nothing worked for the pain so I just sort of resigned myself to that being part

of Samter's and that there is not much i can do about it. I assume that the

Target PM is a type of Tylenol, which has never done anything for me, even in

the large does tablets. Oh well, with any luck I won't have to go through

anything quite as intense as the back operation again. Oh well, if life was fair

none of use would have Samter's. It is what it is. :-)
