Guest guest
I noticed you are in Cinci. Who is your child's doc? We go to Cinci Children's for our son but live in Dayton. , mother to Dominick (4 years) Re:Singulair Our child started Singulair on September 1, 2006 for . Since that time, he has had the following intervals between fevers - 16 Weeks 3 Weeks* 10 Weeks 4 Weeks* 11 Weeks and Counting (as of today, 7/16/07)!! *In these intervals, we realized that we had skipped one or more doses of Singulair and we are hypothesizing that perhaps regular dosing of the Singulair is CRITICAL and that a missed dose at just the right time can allow a fever to break through. As with much with - just hypothesis, not nearly enough data to draw a scientific conclusion. Our son's immunologist is taking a hard look at Singulair and did a survey with this group and has been looking to publish if she can. We still give Prednisone when he does have a fever since the Singulair has spaced them so far apart. Happy to talk further if you like. Guest guest
My daughter has been on singulair for almost a year now I guess. She is almost 3. When we first started it it worked like a miracle with only a few symptoms and a few fevers but with significantly decreased temps and length of cycle. We went months with no fever. As of late it seems the fevers have returned but still with decreased temps (102 instead of 105) and decreased length. The singulair really seems to help with the swollen lymph nodes. We have hardly noticed any since she started it when prior they were quite noticable. I too have noticed that if you miss a dose at the wrong time then you end up with a fever. My doctor had indicated that my child may do better again with an increased dose but she is at the max for her weight. My overall feeling about Singulair is that it is no cure for this but it has sure helped out my child with no side effects. Guest guest
I would like more information. How old is your son and what dose is he on? Aidan is 4 and weighs 32 pounds and is on 4mg chewable. The reason I ask is because his fevers were topping out at 105.6 or even a little higher - and would last anywhere from 3-10 days (only very few 3 day episodes) . . . we have been giving pred. and they have brought the fevers closer - but they go away in a few hours. This last fever though - he couldn't be given pred. because of him immunizations and his fever was 3 days and topped 103.8. So it was a decent cycle. I am wondering if the singulair is making a difference. How far apart were your son's cycles before the singulair and have any of the symptoms diminished? Thanks! Guest guest
Very interesting . . . I am wondering if that's what we are seeing with Aidan. It seems as though Singulair is a pretty easy med as far as side effects and what not. Glad we started him on it! Hannah
Guest guest
Interesting. I wonder if it suppresses inflammation in the body and that's why it works? Isn't it used for Asthma? I have slight Asthma and some of the drugs I have used reduced inflammation in my bronchial area. I brought Singulair up to the Infectious Disease Specialist we are seeing and she said it's a great drug with hardly any side effects. She was very interested in it and she is suppose to call me tomorrow about a possible prescription. hannahlsmith73 <hlsmith73@...> wrote: I don't THINK that there is any Singulair info out there. I asked for Aidan to be put on it cause he had this cough that didn't go away for a few weeks - I told my Ped. that a couple of kids were taking it for - and he felt as though it was a harmless enough drug to try it. He also said " It makes sense that it could work " - whatever that means. Aidan also has had a handful of asthma attacks - so I guess maybe that could have justifed it in his mind. But I was thinking - Aidan's has been described to me as a " hyperactive immune system " - and if Singulair is to help people stop reacting to allergens - I guess it must " control " the immune system some how - to stop their immune systems from reacting to the allergen. Of course that's my laymen thinking - and could be totally wrong. There is a Doc. on this board that is studying and Singulair - she is working on getting a paper published I do believe about these two subjects. Guest guest
My son has been on it since January, although it has made his fevers mellow out a bit, he now picks up every cold possible. We just went to the doctor today and he has decided that a T & A is where we are headed with Jace. What has the recent publicity been? I have not heard anything. I have heard it works for some, halfway works for others and sometimes eliminates the all together. Some I have read that they used it to find the fevers returned later. Hope this helps

Guest guest
Hi Tara We tried Singulair for about 3 months and it worked! We noticed no side effects and our doctor reassured us it's a safe long-term medicine for kids. However we still discontinued it, had a long break from regular medication and eventually went for a T & A 2 weeks ago. For us it didn't feel right giving Emma daily medication of any kind if there is any way of avoiding it. So we preferred going the T & A route and are very hopeful it will work (too soon to tell after 2 weeks!). But it's a very personal decision and I can also understand the many parents on this board who prefer regular medication to surgery. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi Tara, We just had a discussion over on the TRAPS/HIDS group about Singulair. Of the 5 or so families with a child on Singulair, two of us have children that had side effects from the drug including seizures, depression and extreme spaciness to the point of not being able to do anything but stare straight ahead. The articles on the psychological effects of Singualair have hit close to home. But to the majority of people, it is supposed to be a great help. The side effects subsided after being removed from the drug. I would still recommend trying it first, but be aware of the potential psychological reactions. Guest guest
I have a prescription for 10mg/day, but frequently cut it in half to 5mg. Thinking the 10mg over time tends to make me more angry at things that I shouldn't be. Maybe just another ghost, but tend to feel better on 5mg and don't notice any increase in congestion. But, at the same time, I pretty well stay close to a "Love Your Liver" type diet, so I shouldn't have as much excess fat that breaks down into Leukotrienes. Not aware of any clinical research that connects the liver bone to the nose bone, but it's just easier for me to think about and might help to live a little longer. Even though my enzymes are normal "within range", I was pretty brutal to that organ through much of my life. Besides, I now have very little rhinitis and a slight sense of smell. Nothing really new here for this group, though. Dr Cabot's Liver Doctor - Love your Liver and Live Longer Usually wrong, but always looking and always hoping. Guest guest
My doctor generally will prescribe the lowest effective dose of any drug. I've discontinued Singulair in the past for awhile, but am certain it's effective if I'm back on my old high fat diet of pizza, hot dogs and burgers for a few days. I believe it's available in 5 and 10mg. Have been taking 5mg (10mg cut in half) except on pizza day. Just use a simple pill cutter. Aside from treating rhinitis, think it helps with breathing at night. Here's some more information on it, though. Singulair Oral: Dosage, Uses and Warnings Ps: I have a comprehensive blood test done annually for my normal physical exam as well as to check for any liver changes from cholesterol meds.. Never heard of Singulair possibly causing problems there too, but Medscape (above) does mention abnormal hepatic (liver) function tests are possible. It just never ends. Guest guest
All of the questions regarding Singulair have gotten me thinking and I would be interested in any opinions or knowledge out there beyond mine. I have been on 20mgs a day of Singulair for years for polyp control. I am also desensitized. I've been out of surgery now going on 3 years. I am quite happy about that. However, I do wonder whether my liver is toxic. I have had a Naturopath I work with tell me that my liver is very unhappy. I deal with a chronic rash on my abdomen, my skin is very dry and my hair falls out in patches. I also have some chronic stomach issues at this time. Blood testing shows that my hormones and thyroid levels are perfect. Should I be asking to test my liver enzymes? I know that you have to test the liver on Zyflo, but is it also recommended to do so on Singulair? I am also wondering if it would be too risky to go off of Singulair for awhile to see if my symptoms would subside. I am on other meds and can't be sure it is the Singulair that is causing these most irritating symptoms. Thanks all in advance for any responses. Guest guest
,Your comment about Singulair affecting your mood (making you angry) was a huge red flag for me. I've been wondering if it makes me a little depressed and (sorry to get too personal) if it affects my sex drive. I have read a few studies of Singulair saying that these two mood side affects are possible. Anyone else notice that Singulair has changed their moods? I'm considering going off it altogether because I'm a little disturbed by my change in mood.I also have some questions for --how do you take the honey, and are there any counter-indications for the Fungal Defense product that you use? Since I don't know if I have a fungal problem, I don't know if I should take it.Cheers,Becca"Dogs have masters, while cats have staff." --unknown
Guest guest
I take 10 mg of Singulair every day, at night. I actually started taking it when the asthma started, before the polyps and discovering Samters. It does a great job controlling my asthma, until it wears off about 20 hours after taking it. So I take Asmanex in the morning (1 puff) to keep my asthma under control when the Singulair wears off. Once my doc discovered the polyps and I became allergic to aspirin, then he said I would probably take the Singulair for life to help control those symptoms. I don’t think I have side effects from it and if I do, they aren’t bad enough to notice. And since I know it helps control my asthma, I will keep taking it! K. Guest guest
I have been taking 10mg per day since last November. My asthma has been better controlled though I think I need to reserve judgement until I have completed a full year and gone through all the seasons. I do think it has an effect on my mood and temperament. I know I am less tolerant at work and I do sometimes have some rather final thoughts about distancing myself from Samters. I also use Flixonase each day though very recently had to have a week off in preparation for an Aspirin Challenge. The challenge was however cancelled at the last minute due to my continued MRSA collonisation in my nose so that was a downer as I was steeling myself for the event. I have noticeably become more congested and had trouble with Asthma at night as a result. I’m back on the Flixonase now and I really hope some better sleep will follow.
