Guest guest
I am based in the UK and maybe experience a number of seasonal factors which differ from others. I have found that during winter taking a mild walter/salt solution solution and rinsing it around my gums prior to cleaning my teeth before retiring to sleep has lead to my nasal polyps reducing (usually after 4-5 nights of doing it). I think sodium absorption during the winter months is affected, and maybe a small sodium night-time charge is beneficial. Having substituted salt (sodium chloride) with bi-carbonate of soda (as a drink) on two ocasions (they are related chemically), I got a different reaction. On one ocassion the polyps fully retreated by the following morning. On a subsequent occasion I had a strong cough and couldn;t get to sleep. I think the dosage of sodium was probably far too high, and seems to be slightly more disruptive to the the body at night than common house salt. When tried in the spring or in warmer climes this hasn't worked so well, and I have assumed that the bodies balance of sodium is altered at that time. There is some speculation that sodium channels in the body influence inflammation. I won't bore you with my theory on this, but hope it maybe of some help
Guest guest
Thanks for the info , I was read an article lately that says taking a glass of water with salt first thing in the morning helps. It talked a lot about potassium and electrolytes as well and mentioned that drinking gatorade or some other sports drinks that replace electolytes and replenish sodium or salt functions. I will try and find the article. I did try drinking one the other day but failed to keep it up. I am however spending the whole day today to try and sort out my life / health as I now have a chest infection which may be related to a sinuses infection I had a few weeks ago and never bothered with any anti-biotics. I am off to see a new ENT guy this week with a view to walking away with a 7-10 day course of anti biotics, hopefully some god dam beclomethozone drops, a short course of tablet corticoids's and the usual nasonex order. I started taking aspirin a few weeks ago and I am pretty much desensitized now as I take 750mg in the morning and 750mg at night. I am sure the ENT guy will think I am freak for this as they said they know nothing about aspirin desensitization and don't recommend it. They recommend surgery though......which I disagree. Over the weekend I had some drinks and noticed that I feel short of breathe, this may be a coincendence with my chest infection, in don't know or my chest might have leaked Nasonex into my lungs who knows. Guest guest
Stefano, Where are you living? Have you asked others if they know of a good ENT in the area who understands aspirin desensitization? Guest guest
I live in rio, Argentina and I have visited several ENT guys and they are all pretty much the same, take drugs or surgery. They are not really interested in what causes the problem, any alternative fixes to the problem except what the read from pharmaceutical backed books they read at University and obviously don't want to step out from the line and when I mentioned about Aspirin desense they gave me a weird look and dismissed it. I am from the UK and have to fight through the Spanish barrier as well so it makes things a little tougher. This time I want to try things my way, I am already self desensitized and I want drugs. I want anti biotics to clear up any infection, corticoid tablets to shrink these dam polyps, strong beclomethasone drops to hit the sinuses directly, these have been fantastic in the past, also the usual Nasonex spray to take every day and lastly but not least.....I intend to cut back on all diary products, avoid sauces, processed meat and cakes, crisps etc, I will continue with salt irrigation and numerous vitamins like 2-4g a day of C, daily 400ug vitamin E, and some other general multi vitamins.Hopefully, just hopefully I can last a while before the snot appears and if not I will give in and condem myself to yet another operation which I am totally scared off. Actually I meant to mention I will completely stop drinking alcholol for several weeks during this new trial as I know it affects me either by depleting my immune system or maybe there's a direct link to aggravating my polyps. Thanks for reading my post......i'm now off to attack my polyps with a salt rinse. Guest guest
Stefano I can understand the growing feelings of desperation that Samters sufferers have. However, it frightens me to read about the levels of predisnislone tablets etc that people are taking to combat the symptoms. I have had two surgeries followed by nearly ten years of remission (but no sense of smell). Two and half years ago they came back and caused me misery. I would have spontaneous remissions twice a year following a slow decline back to the usual congestion. Last year due to taking salt rinses in the winter the spontaneous remission arrived, and so did my sense of smell also before disappearing after about 1.5 months. There is view that the body hormonal balance is rebalanced at night and that is why i take mild salt rinses during winter months at night rather than in the morning. You get more bang for your buck, as during daylight the system is less rested, and is balancing many other influences continually. Good luck to you > > Thanks for the info , I was read an article lately that says taking a glass of water with salt first thing in the morning helps.
