Guest guest Posted November 23, 2008 Report Share Posted November 23, 2008 hi .. i am new to the samters group .. my ent thought maybe i have this triad since i;ve had 4 surgeries including polypectomies each and every time .. i've had four surgeries from 2001 to 2008 .. last week saw new doctor and i dont have an aspirin allergy so as of last wed i'm taking 2 650mg aspirin twice daily .. and every morn prilosec for stomach issues due to aspirin .. i'm still using nasonex .. advair 250/50 .. allegra d and use my neti pot daily. since i dont have aspirin allergy do i still have samters??? has anyone else tried aspirin and had results .. i'm trying aspirin for 3 months to see if polyps shrink.. i just had surgery late september and as of last week i have 2 polyps already back .. one on each side .. i'm getting discouraged .. i have not had a sense of smell for 16yrs .. i've used prednisone over the years but it too is only temporary and too many side effects.. any suggestions would be appreciated and welcome .. kim Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted November 25, 2008 Report Share Posted November 25, 2008 Have you ever had a reaction to aspirin or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen ? If not, then it is indeed possible that you may not have aspirin intolerance, and therefore not Samter's. Aspirin/NSAID intolerance is a requisite, defining condition for Samter's. It may also be possible that your intolerance might be waiting to appear, but since you take aspirin regularly, it most likely would have been manifest already. So Samter's seems unlikely (unless taking aspirin at such a dose had effected a desensitization, but you would have noticed it in the first place!). Even if you don't have Samter's, you may still have chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps ( " CRS-NP " in abstracts), which in itself is not a funny condition, because polyps inflame the nasal mucosa, block areas, diminish smell, tend to regrow after surgery, and increase the number of sinuses infections. Have you had comprehensive allergy testing ? Are you allergic to something in particular (fungi, pollens, grasses, dust mites, etc), and have you tried getting desensitized to it ? Do your polyps grow more after eating particular foods ?
