Guest guest
What was the time delay between the doses? The self-desensitization I used successfully was one dose a day and started with a much lower dose (if I remember correctly about 5 mg. - much less that 1/2 baby aspirin) and went up gradually over 30+ days. Anyone attempting this should have all the rescue medicines at hand and someone nearby. Carl The Finish of my Self Desensitizin Hello All,Well, I just got home from the emergency room due to my self desensitizing. What a jerk! Started fine. 1/2 baby - then 1 baby- all was fine - felt fine - so I went to 1 1/2 baby aspirin -------- all hell broke out!! My throat closed - my face was swollen and on fire. My wife drove me to the hospital (5 minutes away). They took me right in - shot me up with an epi - medrol - pepsid - and I stayed for hours while I recovered. - Went home with mega persriptions for more stinking steroids - and others.I will now wait (as I shoul have) for my insurance company to give me permission to do this in the hospital as highly recommended by most. Never did I think I would have such a violent reaction from 1 1/2 BABY ASPIRIN!!! So, as you all know - the prednesone makes me shakey, erritable, and it get pimples on my nose, and blood spots on my hands.GOD! I hate this!!!I'll let you know if I ever get the chance to desensitise in the protection of a doctor. I was even thinking of going to that SCRIPP clinic in California. The cost of the air fare is surely cheaper than the over $5,000 out of pocket expenses I had in 2007.Thanks,Dan
Guest guest
Bob, So sorry you went through what you did. We all hate this disease and I hurt for you and all of us when I hear of your difficulties. Now you know that you will have to do this with a doctor close by. I still believe that aspirin desens is worth the try for you. It has certainly helped me considerably. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Guest guest
Dan, I'm really sorry to hear about this. I am so glad that you are okay now. I have to say I do appreciate you posting this as a cautionary tale for others. There are many here who have done self-desensitization successfully. Their protocols may not work for everyone, but certainly we have seen that when people go outside of those protocols it becomes very dangerous. (For me it would be dangerous, period, due to the severity of my aspirin reaction.) Ken has posted a lot of information about self-desensitization in the files here on the site, and there have been recent experiences that have showed us that pushing the dose too soon is not a good idea. One baby aspirin is a LOT of aspirin for a desensitization! At Scripps they do not start you out that large. I reacted severely to about 10 milligrams. I was desensitized twice at Scripps, and both times I was able to take a few extra days and make it into a vacation, as I find it is one of the most beautiful places in the world out there. You can get discount rates at some of the hotels in La Jolla if you are a patient in the hospital. Two of the hotels are quite affordable, especially for such a serene and lovely place. Plus I felt so much better after the desensitization. It was like heaven for me! Dan, I hear and appreciate and understand your frustration. I hope you feel better soon and that your insurance gets on the ball and approves this ASAP. Lori > > Hello All, > Well, I just got home from the emergency room due to my self > desensitizing. Guest guest
It’s the accumulation of the aspirin in your blood that’s what got me the first day but after a terror night of puking and stuff I took an aspirin the next day with no effect and so on for 2 weeks until I was eating 1.3g. But everyone’s different and you made it. Just as well your wife was there. Anyway good luck to sorting through it. Incidentally I went to see the doc and he gave me a 10 day antibiotics course, the usual nasonex and some funny stuff which is generally used for the mouth called atrovent ipratroio, it’s strange but I take it up the nose and recently my taste and smell have returned slightly. First time in a year.
