In the past, there has been some discussion and description here of how others have managed to regain their sense of smell. There are a few different techniques. For me, once a day I lie on my bed with my head hanging over the end and split a respule of Pulmicort between my nostrils. I lie that way for ten to fifteen minutes. It takes me about two weeks to regain my sos. Once my sos returns, I can go to an every other day regime.Burke

I had surgery for removal of polyps in April last year and was pleased when my sense of smell came back about a week after the operation. My sense of smell lasted until the beginning of December when I again lost it. There had been times since April when my sense of smell seemed to come and go but after the beginning of December this seemed to stop.In January I asked my GP for a course of prednisolone to see whether or not this worked before being asked to be referred back to the ENT clinic. My GP gave me a course lasting five days.I was pleased when my sense of smell returned very quickly after starting the course of steroids and so far it has lasted for about three weeks since the course finished. It does of course remain to be seen how long this lasts but I was wondering how frequently it would be safe to take prednisolone.I appreciate that to be on steroids on a long-term basis can create all sorts of other problems but if one were to take a short five day course say every one month or two months or three months I wonder how frequently one would have to take steroids in order for this to present a problem.I wonder if anyone here has any experience of this?

Hi I use pulmicort in a nasal saline rinse. Do you directly put this in without with saline rinse? From: Burke Blevins <burkeblevins@...>samters Sent: Mon, February 21, 2011 10:20:48 AMSubject: RE: Prednisolone-How often?

Yes I do. I never tried it in a neti pot. I found the neti pot in general did not deliver the improvement I expected. I think the gravity assist from the inverted position and concentrated solution is what makes it work for me. My guess is that the pulmicort can seep way back into the sinus cavity and do its magic. It is not the most comfortable position, but the result makes it worthwile.Burke
