How long did u have to be out of work before u applied? 6 months is a long time for me to be out of work if there is a waiting period. then I wonder how much they pay? I live in nevada. also I think u have to be classified really badly disabled before u can get disability. If I could find a sit down job that paid me what I get paid now... I would take it. I am thinking to go to my dr and ask for some stronger paid meds to help curb the pain while I work. the last 2 days my neck has been hurting really bad. I have to walk all day, lift heavy items, carry items etc during the day. I work for a major pet store and my job is cleaning animal cages 2 times a week (18 of them) then I do the same for the birds. inbetween I help customers etc. anyway my question is do u have to be out of work with a dr note for 6 months before they pay u disability? thanks shannaformerboomer

I was a heavy equipment and crane operator and the pain got so bad

that the only way to try and control it was to go to heavy narcotics

(morphine/vicodin) which only works somewhat and I could not safely

operate the equipment on that stuff. My doc said to apply for SSDI

and see what happens. I filled out the forms and mailed them in with

all the medical records from my doctors including the MRI findings.

Everybody said I would be turned down especially because I did all of

it myself without an attorney. I was approved on the first try. I

think the cauda equine was a major factor in getting it approved. I

draw $1425.00 a month and have Medicare now that I have waited the

two years that is required before you can qualify for it.And yes

there is a 6 month waiting period from the date of your application

with the Social Security,as far as dissability with the state it

varies from state to state and you would have to check with Nevada on

that. The firts question you need to answer is will your doctor

support you for dissability.

Kavi this is the second time I have posted this answer so if it shows

up twice I apologize. I was a heavy equipment and crane operator and

the pain just got to be too much. I went on narcotics

(morphine/vicodin) to try and control some of it with only limited

success. My doctor suggested I apply for disability to the Social

security and I went on state workman's comp at that time. Everybody

said I was foolish to apply to SSDI without an attorney but I filled

out all the paperwork and submitted it along with all the medical

records and MRI reports pertaining to my condition. I had the name

and address of my case worker at the SS and I sent him updates

regularly with medical reports and my status. I applied in June of

2005 and I received the approval in October of that year and had to

wait until November 2005 to start as the SS has a six month waiting

period. I receive $1425.00 per month and had to wait until November

of last year to get on Medicare because they require a two year wait

from the start date of the SSDI to qualify for it. As far as the

state waiting period each one is different so I would suggest

contacting Nevada for that. I think the cauda equine syndrome was a

big part in my getting approved. The first thing I think you should

do is determine if your doctor is going to support you because if he

or she isn't going to then I'm afraid you would be wasting your time.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, " If " you are approved with your first application

there is a 5 month waiting period. In essence, you would receive

your first check in your sixth month after filing for disability. My

husband who receives SSDI applied and was approved on his first

application (note: he has a different disease than Spinal Stenosis).

You have to meet the bluebook listing thru SSA.

A misconception that many people have is that you have to wait 6

months or a year to apply. That is not the case. My husband took

medical leave 11-05. He applied for SSDI before the end of 11-05.

He received his first check May 2006.

Your disability benefits is based on your work record as long as you

have enough work credits for the past ten years. Now, if you have

not worked much then you may qualify for SSI which is a needs based

disability program. Big difference between SSI and SSDI.
