Considering that your wife had a major bleeding episode, it sounds

reasonable that her doctors would be reluctant to put her through a

comparitively risky procedure like a liver biopsy. When I had my biopsy

they didn't really think there was anything wrong with my liver, but

instead were suspicious of pancreatic cancer. I hadn't had a prothrombin

time run prior to being hospitalized, but they did one while I was in the

OR (for other invasive tests in addition to the biopsy). Apparently my

clotting ability was so low they had to scramble to get 5 units of plasma

before they proceeded with the biopsy. I don't know if they used it or

not, but they told my husband that the biopsy was delayed while they

" searched " all over Las Vegas for 5 units. The only reason that I can

imagine for the urgency would be because of the high risk of bleeding

caused by liver biopsy. Since then, my Hepatologist has referred to a

liver biopsy as being high risk, but I don't remember in what context.

Clearly, your wife's doctors aren't taking chances at your wife's expense.

So many of the invasive procedures that are used for diagnosis are risky

but they're necessary, I know. They can scan me all they want, but when

they insert things and start snipping, I continue to rebel. My husband had

a myelogram a few months ago and the fluid, for some reason, backed up and

didn't pass through his spine. He said it was like liquid fire and it

lasted for more than an hour. He'll never agree to another. And, when I

had a lung biopsy last summer, my lung collapsed and correction of that

problem was worse than the biopsy! That's besides the risk for bleeding.

They didn't plan on hospitalizing me for the biopsy but wanted to

hospitalize me after the collapse. I had to promise to go directly to the

Bed and Breakfast that we'd decided to splurge on, and then directly to bed

for the night and they wouldn't let us leave for home for almost 24 hours.

Given all the scare talk, however, sometimes we have to go through some

fairly frightening and painful procedures if we hope to see a diagnosis or

an improvement in our condition. If I'm sick enough, I'll agree to anything!

You can write the Editorial section of your local newspapers, as they post letters there, from their subscribers. And you can write your Government Reps.
