Botanical: Brassica oleracea Family: N.O. Brassicaceae / Cruciferae Description: The cabbage is a round biennial leaf plant with compact cluster forming leaves. The cabbage, a member of the Cruciferae family, is related to kale, broccoli, collards and Brussels sprouts. There are three major types of cabbage: green, red and savoy. Part Used Medicinally: The only part of the plant that is normally eaten is the leafy head. Constituents: The cabbage is fairly low in calorie, and relatively low in protein content. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber, manganese, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids, thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, and protein. Medicinal Uses: Cabbage helps treat gastric disorders; peptic and duodenal ulcers. Raw cabbage juice is effective in treating peptic ulcers. It has cardiovascular benefits and helps alleviate migraines. It is an adjuvant therapy for recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a head and neck disease caused by human papilloma virus types 6 and 11. The phytonutrients in cabbage increase the production of enzymes involved in detoxification, the cleansing process through which the body eliminates harmful compounds. Cabbage rich diets are associated with lower incidence of a variety of cancers, including lung, colon, breast, bladder and ovarian cancer. Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from harmful free radicals. Antioxidant polyphenols abundant in red cabbage, particularly its anthocyanins, can protect brain cells from the damage caused by Alzheimer's disease. Cabbage leaves are used to treat acute inflammation; raw cabbage extract or paste placed in a cabbage leaf and wrapped around the affected area can reduce discomfort. It is also good for treating joint pain and several skin ailments including acne. Preparation: To preserve its vitamin C content, cabbage should be cut and washed right before cooking or eating. Since phytonutrients in the cabbage react with carbon steel and turn the leaves black, a stainless steel knife should be used. The infusion of 60 grams of cabbage leaves in 0.5 liters of water helps treat intestinal inflammation. Consuming three glasses of raw or cooked cabbage leaves helps reduce the thyroid secretion in goiter patients. The infusion of 250 grams of cabbage leaves in 250 cc of water is useful in treating respiratory diseases and asthma. Fresh concentrated cabbage juice obtained by pressing white cabbage promotes the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Caution Cabbage contains goitrogens which can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. As a result, it is considered as a treatment in hyperthyroidism whereas individuals with hypothyroidism should avoid it.
