Hi all, I'm Heidi, mom to Cheyla ('Shyla'), 12 year old sensory wonder. We live in Palm Harbor FL. Cheyla was diagnosed with SPD at age 3 at which time I also came to realize that I had had sensory issues all my life as well. It was when she was 2 that I noticed something odd; she became very anxious right before her second birthday party. I thought it was just the beginning of the terrible twos but as soon as her party was over she was back to her sweet self again.

By the time she turned 3, tactile defensiveness had fully blossomed. I searched 'clothes hurt body' on the internet and found the words 'sensory integration'. In the years to follow she attended speech therapy and then a speech pre-k as well as occupational therapies and cranial sacral therapy. We tried brushing and a listening program as well but nothing has really made a dent in her biggest issue, tactile defensiveness. She is also sensitive to light and sound and is painfully shy albeit popular with her close knit group of friends.

Now that adolescence is approaching and hormones are kicking in, her anxiety has increased. She cannot tolerate layered clothes or anything even slightly scratchy or snug on her body. Cheyla is very bright and strives for perfection in everything she does. Still, it's hard for her to get comfortable in her own body and nearly impossible after being wet. She loves being in water but drying off after is what causes the most problems.

I found this group after listening to a discussion via the Consciously Parenting Project which lead me to search for more on Dr. Masgutova's therapy. I have not taken any courses yet but I look forward to learning more in the future.

Heidi
