I figure as long as the bad was decreased I was in good shape! BUT my cholesterol was never high before and I always attributed it to not having a gallbladder. in Bama <A HREF= " http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/myhomepage/profile.html " > http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/myhomepage/profile.html</A> Rny to Ds revision 12/03 Down104lbs!! Not second guessing, just your opinion and we all have those. My opinion is if you can raise the good cholesterol from foods then eat and avoid making the drug companies richer...Unless of course you own stock in them! in Bama <A HREF= " http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/myhomepage/profile.html " > http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/myhomepage/profile.html</A> Rny to Ds revision 12/03 Down104lbs!! Guest guest
> Marta...I thought drugs only reduced the bad cholesterol, but doesn't affect > the good kind.... Mel, the drugs can decrease the good kind, as well as the bad kind. I am conservative and would not see any reason to treat low good cholesterol if the bad cholesterol is also low. Certain drugs are effective in raising the good cholesterol. I personally wouldn't do a kneejerk reaction, but that is probably because I am more comfortable treating WLS patients. I am the resident " expert " at my clinic and the other docs refer the patients to me. I don't remember my exact numbers, but I am sure my good cholesterol is low or lowish. You have to remember what exactly makes good cholesterol " good " . The reason it is good is because it transports the " bad " lipids (fat) and can remove it from areas where we don't want it. IF the overall chol is low, then what are we worried about? Why worry about transporting the stuff around. I mean, I would follow the most recent guidelines, of course. I wish I hadn't even said anything. It is impossible to second guess another doc especially over the internet and I should not have done so. I usually avoid doing that... Marta PS Mel that dose of ibuprofen I give ROnny is 20 mg.

Guest guest
Hi Lee! Sorry this is so late. I just don't have time during the week to post anymore. I still disagree with the drug suggestion. I know I'm remembering correctly that there are NO meds that will help with low HDL cholesterol. Good for you for exercising regularly! Just keep it up and hopefully it will help. You know, it could be genetic. I haven't thought to ask my mom what her good cholesterol count is. I'm doing well. Trying hard to lose some more weight. I've been having protein drinks for breakfast and dinner a couple of days a week to see if it will kickstart things. I'm bummed because Trader Joe's has been out of my favorite soy chicken bites for about a month now. (Ever since the big grocery strike began.) I had to cross the picket line last night to get something for my husband that Food For Less doesn't carry and it was kinda scary to see so many empty shelves in the store. The bakery and deli were completely shut down. One thing I really noticed was the attitude of the temporary employees. They just don't have that same customer friendliness that I'm used to. I sure hope this strike ends soon. I'll still shop at Food For Less because I discovered they're so much cheaper but for the few items they don't carry, I still have to go to Vons occasionally. I hope you're having a great weekend! Hugs! Tracey > Regarding the cholesteral. I worked out 14 times in October. I don't > think I could squeeze anymore in. Guest guest
Hi Tracey! Thanks for your response to my note. Of course, you are right. I like your analogy, worrying too much about something that might never happen is like paying interest on a loan you might never need. I must try to remember to read the posts and not think everything will happen to me. I have been doing well and have a great doctor, I shouldn't worry too much unless a problem arises. I think I have reached the point mentioned by Maui Nanc. The first year following my diagnosis, I was frantically researching on line all the time, never having a moment with cml out of my mind. Now, I'm into my second year on Gleevec. I've reached the point that I have had to settle down and realize that this doesn't go away. My life has changed forever. It's like the story of the person who planned a vacation for a special place and then the plane landed somewhere else. They stayed and still had a good time. Maybe I'm somewhere I never planned to be, but I hope I can still make the best of it. I also started taking an antidepressant and I think it has helped tremendously. I find I can live in a more normal way now that I'm not obsessing about cml all the time. in NY Zero Club #
Guest guest
Is it Dr. Lasky? I hate to say this but I did not like him to well. Maybe it was just the situation we were in. He is a bit blunt and assumed we knew everything we SHOULD know but did not. He was the dr that replaced our original dr. I remember him saying " Oh you will like me because I am just like your first doctor. " Then, he proceeded to say that everything that our first doctor said to do was wrong! Well, hopefully you will like him and if not, maybe you could try Dr. Becker. Good luck.--- & Elaney PS---We went to the orthotist today and got Elaney's brace padded for that silly sternum. He acted like he knew what the problem was with her sternum. He said the cartilage may not be strong enough and that it is buckling outward. He said that bracing usually helps that. WOW, that is the first time I have heard anybody act like they may know what is up with that sternum! It makes me feel hopeful that we may be on the right track. ztaimw <nsigns@...> wrote: Thanks for your reply, I have since called and made an appt. for Madi with the other ped rheumy at Children's Mercy-he had the first appt. available, and we got in early next month. I can't believe how easy it was, and I didn't even need a dr. referral! I'm really hoping that we can connect better with this dr. so I can feel more comfortable with everything. Madi is doing ok, she has a few slightly swollen joints, but nothing that is stopping her from being an almost 2 year old! Boy is she a booger! She's been fighting an intestinal bug for the past several days, so I'm hoping the swelling is just because of that and will go away when she gets to feeling better. Hoping all is well with your household and that you get things figured out for Elyssa too.
