Guest guest
Hey Group: Thanx again Amy for starting this site, I believe this is the one for me. As a 'newbie' to the site, I was in a cancer chat and met my 'bro' , whom I love very much. I realize people are giving background info about themselves, so here goes. . . usually I don't tell this story to people I don't know. You however, are my brothers and sister survivors, and maybe in sharing, it will help 'newbies' to CML. I am a 53 y/o Black female in a permanent relationship with a wonderful 60 y/o man. As for CML, in 11/03; 9 days before my son went into the Air Force I thought I had pneumonia and went into the ER. After 3 days of high dosages of antibiotics, I was not responding to treatment, Having had pneumonia before, I told my pulmonary specialist daily that something else was wrong. He has a partner who has a brother that is a Hematologist-Oncologist, so he had the insight to check my WBC. If he had been a PCP, I might not be alive today. Well, my counts were off the chart, so he called the H-O doctor in, and being a weekend, the 'new boy was oncall. A BMB was performed the following day and Gleevec treatment began, that's when I knew I was dying (side effects. . . been there/done that/and doing that(Yuck). There were over 800,000 per 1,000,000+ cells and on 12/03/03 the 'new boy' told me that I had 2 months to live. Well, this was a shock, but " I Ain't Finished Yet " !!! Called my son and told him during boot training, he had enough to deal with; they told him the only way he could come home was 'when I died or go AWOL. Father came and annointed me and gave me the last rites. Not the 1st time I had been told I was dying...but this was different. . . this was a 'terminal blood cancer'. Pneumonia at 6, my parents were told that I wouldn't make it; and again at 37 my ex was told I wouldn't make it through the night. I have Osteonecrosis, Osteoarthritis, Lumbar degenerative disease of my Spine, Cervical Spondysis, 2 total (L) hip replacements, contracted Hepatitis B & C through a blood transfusion after the birth of my son in 1984 (this was before the HIV epidemic, and testing of the blood supply) Tendonitis of my ® elbow, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in the accelerated stage, on 12/18/03 I went to the cancer center in my area and the 4 cancer specialists told me that I had 2 -5 months to live, cannot have a BMT because I have Hepatitis and I can't take Interferon. To add insult to injury, my HMO called me prior to xmas and told me that they had good news and bad news. The good news is that they would pay for my treatment, the bad news is that they wouldn't pay for a BMT from the bank (thanx) I'm an only child, and my 2 children were not matches. In 6/04 I was rushed to ER with chest pains twice, admitted and as a result; I have Coronary Artery Disease and 2 stents. 8/04 I went to the ER, I fell in '01 prior to 2nd hip replacement and had a pin implanted in my right pinkie finger. 3 Doctors at another hospital previously had refused to treat me with more than antibiotics because they said that the pin had been anchored incorrectly. At the ER where the surgery was done a 'moron' doctor opened and exposed the pin. As a result I got a staph infection from the hospital and in 9/04, 1/2 my finger was amputated by another Orthopedic surgeon whom I trust. 2/05 I had oral surgery and a tooth removed, due to side effects of chemo, my gums had shrunk and now cavities filled next week. Years ago I spent thousands on root canal and crown work to save my teeth (HaHa). I 'fired' the new boy, because I was in the hospital for 3 days in 3/04 due to my low ANC count and he wouldn't give me the pain medication I was on saying that my pain was not related to my cancer. He was the admitting doctor, I saw the house pain management doctor and he made a recommendation for another medication, which the new boy wouldn't give me. I've probably forgotten surgerys, but 3 c-sections and 2 hammertoe surgerys and whatever else I have forgotten are so minor; hardly worth mentioning. I am alive, and I tell everyone " I AM FANTASTIC " !!! I have a very upbeat attitude, no longer use my wheelchair, walker, crutches or cane and I let no one feel sorry for me. To the doctors who gave mortality rate, I say " Man points . . . God appoints " . To my sister & brother survivors I say, you are an individual and don't agree with any doctor who gives you statistics. You are 'special' and you need a specialist. I have a Primary Care Physician, Optometrist, Orthopedic Surgeon, Pain Management Specialist, Neurologist, Cardiologist, Hematologist-Oncologist, and seeing an ear-nose-throat spcialist next week for a mass that showed up on my dental xray. I get nervous each time I have an xray due to the correlation to CML. I was told I would never reach " 0 " , I did in 12/04. Had I listened to the doctors and taken to my bed, I would have been dead, depressed, or insane by now, needing an undertaker, psychologist, or psychiatrist. I never remove a charm and I truly know " every day is a gift from God " and I AIN'T FINISHED YET " !!! Take care and I have the 'group' in my prayers. " K " " I AIN'T FINISHED YET " !!!
