-Hi Cheryl, congratulations on finding out there are tons of

us " Harrington Rodders " out there. You might want to check out Ellen

Kiley's Scolioyoga. There's also an article about her in the Files

section on this website.

there are three things I have been doing for my abs

1. while lying on my back, I suck in my belly and hold it tight

2. lie down with knees bent, feet on floor. place a large exercise

ball on the belly. press down on the ball and hold.

3. slendertone ab belt as seen on tv. The isometric exercises may be

just as effective

Hi Cheryl,

I suggest you look into taking Pilates lessons with an accredited and

experienced instructor. Don't join a mat class – it will do more harm

than good – you must work on the Reformer, and one-on-one. You can do

this for a few weeks or months, weekly, and then buy a cheap reformer

and do the exercises at home on your own.

Pilates, modified for spinal fusions, will stretch and strengthen all

your muscles, including the deep abdominals, which form a kind of

corset (when strong) around your trunk. This will support and protect

your spine, decrease muscle spasms, and allow you to be slightly more

flexible without endangering your fusion.

I know about this because after working with several traditional

physical therapy programs, I was still stiff and in pain and was

feeling hopeless and helpless. But then I was introduced to a Pilates

instructor who had had 2 fusions of her own, and she had modified

standard Pilates routines to suit people with fusions.

The exercises are gentle, safe, effective and actually fun (and I hate

exercising). My instructor and I wrote a book describing her exercise

routine and it was published last October. To see more about it, you

can go to www.pilatesforfragilebacks.com .

If you want some sample warm-up exercises that you can do at home,

please let me know and I'll send them to you. Also, just to let you

know, we won't be making any money on this book so I'm not telling you

this to make a profit. I really believe in the regimen – it's saved my

life.

Best Wishes,

Andy (Boulder CO)

I am 41 years old now and find it very difficult to strengthen my abs

without bending my spine. Does anyone have a suggestion or something

that is working for you?
