Guest guest
Dear , I have a 14 year old son who has OCD since he was 7. There were so many times where I felt the same way as you involving different circumstances that might seem odd to other people. When I read what you said about your son's problem, it reminded me of my son in the sense that he would avoid going into bathrooms at all costs because of his fear of contamination from urine. The paradox is that he would sometimes wet himself instead. OCD doesn't make sense and so I've found that you can't try to figure it out rationally but instead in the context of what it is. He would sometimes even lick his fingers to get the germs off them. I was just thinking that maybe your son is avoiding going into the bathroom or not wanting to get involved in all the rituals he might have to do in there. It is just a thought because I don't know what your son's OCD issues are. I thought maybe this might shed some insight into the problem in some way. Also, we have had doctors who were off target with their advice interpreting my son's ocd avoidance with his being manipulative, impulsive and obstinate. This just served to feed into my son's anger, scrupulosity and general feeling of anxiety. It was almost like being wrongly accused of something or that he was somehow doing something wrong because he couldn't control his OCD. It is always hard to figure out what is the OCD and what is just a kid being a kid. But we have found that if you know your child and his nature, and he is acting really out of character in his resistance to do something, then we look to find a reason because of his OCD. I hope this can help in some way. I can only tell you about our experiences over the past 7 years. Good luck. Noelle
Guest guest
HI : When Steve used to tell me he didn't know about his behavior, that was generally confirmation that it was part of his OCD. Of course, he was rather non-communicative about stuff then as he felt anything he told me would be turned into a situation where I would " make " him touch a feared object. Sometimes our beloved OCDers say they don't know because they are so embarrassed about their behavior. If this is a new behavior I would really try to rule out it being OCD before considering something else. We had the same problem with Steve, instead of urine it was feces. Quite offensive I can assure you. Actually it was one of the behaviors we put on the list of difficult behaviors when we started our professional parenting plan and family contract to change his behaviors. And I am happy to say it was one that changed first. Steve hated it too. To this day I do not know the specifics but it needed to be addressed in CBT therapy with his therapist. Steve has contamination OCD as a biggie and who knows the specifics of what he was thinking. Two of our three bathrooms were too contaminated for him to consider using them, and the third would go in and out of being acceptable/riskable to him. Urinary and bowel obsessions are not at all unusual. It is quite possible some kids think that they must hold it in or something bad will happen. And finally biology takes over and removes the decision from their control, and viola we have a stinking mess to deal with and not get agitated about or else their OCD will flare up even more! I know these behaviors are upsetting to us. I hated Steve's spitting compulsions as he would spit on his shirt constantly (his saliva was too contaminated to swallow) and he could not change it (clothing issues!). In the tropical heat he would really start to smell rank in no time. I found it repulsive but had to learn it was OCD, that he had to learn how to boss this one, and until that happened I had to learn to keep my cool and be patient until he got it under control. This problem has nothing to do with your effectiveness in toilet training your child, in fact it lends itself to quite a bit of humor and paradoxical therapy if you would like to try it. If Steve was pooping on the rug now due to his OCD, I would ask him to accompany me outside to my compost pile and arrange himself precariously above it and make his deposits there so we could get something productive out of his hard work! Maybe this seems too zany, but we have found the more uncomfortable the situation, the better it responds to humor and paradoxical therapy. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (H) kathyh@... This suggestion came from a psychiatrist who understands about ERP, but doesnt necessarily have time to conduct it with patients. The doc's interpretation was " do it if you have to, but you'll clean up too " . I believe by doing this Exposure part, the Response Prevention is he'll hate to clean up and so he'll stop the behaviour. You can explain that this is what is will happen if he urinated on a carpet. As a mom, you can try and stay neutral and just hand him the cleaning bucket in a matter of fact manner after he has urinated on the carpet. (If you have to - GET OUT of the room or house if you think he's going to get angry at you.) If he understands what's happened, put on some music, and encourage him to take back control from that OCD monster that is making him do extra work (peeing on the carpet and having to clean it up)!! I guess you have to use a combination of parenting skills and ocd-parenting skills to get yourself through this one!! He probably sees this as YOUR problem, not his! thanks for sharing, this is an issue that comes up among many parents, btw. take care, wendy in canada wb4@... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
I suspect he does know why he does it, and I doubt that it is lack of impulse control. There are LOTS of bathroom issues that OCD can get involved in. We've been through a bunch of them, but there's always a new twist to it. If you could gain his confidence and find out why he does it (in a way that HE won't feel humiliated and judged but accepted), you can probably apply the ERP tools to change it. Guest guest
Dear , Please don't feel humiliated here. Everyone understands the pain and confusion that this disorder brings to a family. You are right this is an embarrassing situation and I want you to know you are not alone. Ian started with something like this - he wouldn't realize he had to go to the bathroom until it was too late and had a number of accidents. When we talked with Dr. Hatton he suggested that while Ian was at home we should have him go every hour on the hour so that he could reestablish his control. This worked well and Ian was able to stop having accidents. Then he started going to the bathroom outside (I don't know how long it had actually been going on). One afternoon, I looked out in the backyard and Ian was peeing in the middle of the patio and (it seemed to me) trying to pee on his brother. Fortunately, we had an appointment with the Dr. that afternoon. Ian said that yes he had gotten mad at his brother and did try to pee on him. He also said that he had a 'secret spot' outside where he peed regularly. When the Dr. asked why he said he liked to see the leaves move. Our dr. also feels this is an impulse control issue. We now have a firm rule about no peeing outside. And Ian has targets to choose from in the bathroom (Cheerios, and such). We still have occasional lapses, but for the most part Ian is trying to follow this rule. Take care, joy in san diego
Guest guest
Hi , My almost seven year old (2/16 is her birthday) has been doing that on and off since I can remember. She still wears a pull up through the night. She doesn't know why she sometimes urinates on the rug, kitchen floor etc. " it just happens " . I know some are down right accidents, but some I just can't grasp it. She was diagnosed with OC at 3 and 1/2 and mood disorder this past summer. Maybe it is impusle control - these disorders are so complex and the brain is so fascinating to figure out - you can't! Please try not to feel humiliated - that never helped me as I was cleaning up the mess!! mary in pa Help needed >From: Gpcpkp@... > >My 8 year old son has ADHD and OCD. Guest guest
Hi Melinda I live in Byron Ga. Deep in the south where it seems there is very little or no help to be found. I am very worried about my wife since she lost her job she has took a nose dive into depression and I am getting to the point that I do not leave her alone. If possible I would appreciate all the legal advice I can get . I have called a few so called friends and family and it seems the first sentence starts with (We don't have any money) I am not looking for a handout. All I want is what is right and due to my wife. She is really stressing about my meds since we can no longer afford them . I have to have the meds. I am sure that other people are in the same situation. No insurance means no meds which means no longer living. Its getting hard to trust in God anymore because all the answer I get from him are not very helpful. Melinda I appreciate the ear you have loaned to me it feels good to to have someone to unload on Thank youfor your time Mike Ross
Guest guest
No problem Mike, hmm im trying to think of what you can do. there are alot of lawyers who will give some kinda advice over the phone for free. As for your meds, are you on disability? can you go to welfare, i know welfare stinks but go please. They might also have more resources for you to draw from to get more help with things like medical insurance and food. Here in massachusetts we have something called Masshealth. its a Medicaid of sorts. Find out if your state has that and apply. you could ask for help from churches, and i dont know if you have a survival center down there like we have up here, kinda like the salvation army only they do food too. Obviously if you dont have money for meds you probably dont have money for food or other esentials. I wish i were more help. but i would start with your state agency. as for your wife being depressed, i dont know what to say, with out insurance i dont know what you can do........ Im not much help, but i can try to find out more i just dont know much hugs mike hang in there. melinda At 12:44 PM 6/1/01 -0400, you wrote: Hi Melinda I live in Byron Ga. Guest guest
Mike, Melinda gave most of the advice that I can come up with, has your wife checked into unemployment? It is a check until she can get on her feet. Also in my city we have a Family Health Center where the doctor visits and medication are based are your ability to pay. Most cities have a crisis hotline that should also be able to help you to locate services in your community. We are pulling for you Mike, and I will say a prayer (who knows it might help). I did not take employment law when I was in school so I really don't know what to say except talk to an attorney. She might have a case of wrongful termination. That two people would spend so much of there own time helping people, some of whom they will never see face to face, is charity in the truest sense of the word. I have already notified all news stations and they are anxious to hear the stories of folks using alternative therapies and complimentary therapies. This is turning out to be a very large ordeal and if you are available to come, It would not only be great representation for you but also a way to reach people about the many ways to cure one's cancer or help with the side effects. Thank you very much for any and all help.
