Guest guest
That is a great idea about the cards - I bought one of those label making machines and have just about everything in my house labeled - bed, mirror, cabinet, forks etc. I believe it is helping with word recognition. Guest guest
This is just a brag about my guy so if you are not interested please feel free to delete as I may get a little long winded. I am rather excited and this could happen ;-) Brag #1 I received a note home from 's teacher yesterday. I know many don't believe in " special needs " school and most believe that inclusion is the only way to go but for my who was doing so poorly in the public school, this private school has been a godsend. Anyway, the teacher's note said something to the effect that since is doing so well with matching upper and lower case letters and that she doesn't want him to get bored, she has started him on flash-cards. These cards he can put into a machine and the machine reads him the word. He is loving it!!!! She is starting him out with words he will use and see every day like his classmates names, in, out, etc. Anyway, she sent home a about six cards (his first bunch) of his classmates names for him to have a set at home. Well, this morning I was asking him about the cards (he doesn't like to discuss his day at night - maybe he is tired) and surprise of surprises - MY BABY CAN READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know this is just a few sight words/names but he knows them every time and will even tell me something about each one. Like Neel - sick (he says and signs sick - too cute) or - scratch me (Brain scratched him one day - boy can this kid hold a grudge or what) I couldn't believe it!!!!!! Then he will sign and say AGAIN and we do it all over again. I was just so thrilled!!!!!! I am also amazed that this teacher just sees what needs doing and moves it along. I am sure if I had a problem, we would adjust it but how could I??? She also put in her note the Mrs. MacMillan (the principal) recently commented on 's good behavior :-) Brag #2 I have been trying to come up something for to do on the weekends or some kind of sports activity to become involved in that he would enjoy and do well with. He is getting a bit chunky and I don't want him just watching the TV. Being a working mom and him having such a long bus ride makes it hard. I thought of Karate but our one and only visit was not really very successful so I have been putting that off. Anyway, he loves to swim so I called the YMCA. I had thought of doing it before but the thought of having to put on a bathing suit with him every week kinda put me off - let alone what I thought the cost would be ;-) I was also worried that there would be a problem of the age level class they would want him in as 7 year olds wouldn't be good for him but that is how old he is. I didn't want to hurt his self-esteem by trying to do something fun and good for him. So, I called yesterday and they have a program for 5-18 year olds called Kaleidoscope (sp?) for Special Needs kids!!!!!!!!! It is every Saturday from 12-1pm and I think he will love it. The trick might be getting him out of the water :-) There is a teacher and lots of one-on-one volunteers. It is a 10-week program for $65 membership to the Y and $10 for the class!!!!!!!!!!! No explanations required, no problems with age, and best of all no bathing suit for mom!!!!! Does it get better than this? If you made it this far, thanks for sharing the good with me as well as helping with the bad :-) Dawn (mom to 7ds)
Guest guest
I just remembered, we used to get books or something that had short stories written with pictures for nouns and words in between. I would read the words and he would name the pictures. He was not really reading but it gave him the idea that it was fun. And it was more for fun than anything, something we could do together. Guest guest
HI Dawn , It is so great to read a really positive and upbeat post!Gives me hope that better days are coming ..We are going to try the card idea over the holidays.I agree that inclusion does not always meet a child s needs . DO you get respite for your son? The swimming should be great and may lead to other activiies in the future. --- " Shaw, Dawn " <Dawn.Shaw@...> wrote: > This is just a brag about my guy so if you are not > interested please feel > free to delete as I may get a little long winded.
