Guest guest
Hi , The fluid retention around the eyes (peri-orbital swelling) is most likely Gleevec related. This is one of the notable side effects of Gleevec and many people experience it. I also have recently had below normal potassium and I've been supplementing with 595mg's of potassium daily (it's also good for the heart.) If your doctor is reluctant to prescribe a diuretic, then I'd ask him about taking potassium. Sodium & potassium work together in your body to hold or relieve you of water. It sounds like potassium would help with your edema. Bananas and oranges are a good source of natural potassium. Sometimes I've had sudden fluid retention and it was due to eating a high salt meal. (I love Mexican food!) It took a few days to go away. Have you had any muscle or finger/toe cramping? If so, then calcium/magnesium helps with that. Guest guest
Hi , Edema is very common with Gleevec. Have you tried natural diuretics like coffee, tea, watermellon, grapes or cucumbers? I find if I drink something that I'm not used to, like juice, then I'll go like a race horse. If I drink too much, too often, then I get used to it and it doesn't work anymore so I have to switch to something else like tea or coke. Gleevec does deplete potassium so it's not surprising you're low on it but there are supplements you can get if you get too low. It's a delicate balancing act though because too much isn't any better than too little. You really have to monitor your electrolytes regularly. Take care, Tracey > I have a question. Guest guest
Hi. In addition to adding potassium through natural nutrients there are other nutrients that work well as natural diuretics including watermelon and dark greens. L [ ] fluid retention I have a question. I wonder if any of you had an experience with sudden fluid retention in the legs and feet? I had that happen within the last few days. I became quite alarmed. I spoke with my oncologist and am supposed to call back on Monday. I am not on any type of water pill which my dr. is reluctant to prescribe. I have borderline low potassium already. I had two nights of extreme swelling of my lower legs and feet with a sudden weight gain of about five pounds. Today it is much better after being able to put my feet up for longer periods of time over the weekend. About half of the weight is also gone, but I feel swollen around the eyes more than usual too. I'm a little concerned about kidney function. My oncologist said my kidney function has always been good and didn't think this sudden fluid retention was gleevec related. I tend to think otherwise. What do you think? What could cause this to happen suddenly? I appreciate your opinion on this matter. Thanks! in NY dx. 1/04 400 mg. I sometimes has leg swelling....just the feeling of 'tight skin'..... like my 'body suit' is too small! : ) I do not have ankle swelling per se. Dr. Druker has Rx'd Dyazide for me, and I use it occasionally (really more for when I notice some ear discomfort from edema). He prefers this to the usual diuretics (can't remember the name) because it is more potassium sparing.....and then you aren't also dealing with low potassium. My local onc (a nice, YOUNG guy) was surprised....he told me that ide was more of a blood pressure medication. I mentioned this to Druker....and he said.... " well duh....it lowers blood pressure because it reduces fluid/edema " . My local onc had no intention of challenging Dr. Druker about this anyway. And like other have mentioned, I try to eat some things that are naturally diuretic....like watermelon, even now, almost every day. Also I juice cucumbers....with carrots and celery and parsley. I do believe that with diet you can offset or reduce many of the side effects of Gleevec. Hope your swelling is down soon. Maui Nanc
Guest guest
Hello: As soon as I went on a higher dose of gleevec, I started to have some fluid retention. The hematologist prescribed diazide quite soon as the blood pressure also tended to be up. I've not had a problem with blood pressure or fluid retention. One problem,if I'm not careful, with diazide is a tendency to low potassium. Yes, I think fluid retention is due to gleevec, Sincerely, MJH
Guest guest
Hi , Yes, as a matter of fact. My husband and I just got back from a Caribbean cruise and during the cruise my husband felt that he was retaining more fluid despite taking 2 lasix's a day and his usual supplements. His hands were visibly swollen and stiff. When we got back the scale showed him weighing 7 pounds more than when we left and that was over a week's time. Within two days he lost all 7 pounds and was spending a considerable amount of time in the bathroom. The weight was all fluid retention and we're not sure why it happened. The food was saltier than what we make for ourselves at home and of course we ate it three times a day for 7 days. But still, he's had salty meals before with no apparent increase in fluid retention and he was taking lasix. You would think that the lasix would eliminate the excess fluid. Apparently it was accumulating faster than the lasix could remove. I don't know if the salt air and water were factors too. In any event, we're home and his body seems to have returned to its " normal " state. Adrienne nchando@... wrote: I have a question. Guest guest
Hi Margaret Drink lots of water, at least 4pts per day. Drinking water actually reduces water retention, rather oddly. It reduces toxins in the body by helping to flush them out.. Prep H around the eyes does help but it's quite greasy so best to use at night. I too had this problem on 600mg when I was first dxd. It's not fun and often it's the only thing people can see that you have any sort of disease what so ever. Ask your Onc - he's bound to be able to help. Be well --- Margaret Peake <mpraymond@...> wrote: > can someone please tell me what you're doing for > this? My face, hands, feet are puffy. I've cut back > on salt but it doesn't seem to help much. Because you have some edema in your feet, your doctor needs to make sure you are not having any signs of congestive heart failure. But, yes, there are others on diuretics because of Gleevec....and some use it regularly....hopefully you will hear from some of them. C.
