Guest guest
I have no experience with a trache, but I do know the kids with NG tubes don't care to eat much eat either until the tube comes out... sure makes sense! And with the narrow passages of kids with DS, how could their be room for food and tubes?? Just guessing now, as I said no experience at all I wish you the best in getting him to take food orally! --Carol in IL -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Kristy Colvin" <imdsapresident@...> Hi Sara,My grandson has VATER syndrome and had a tracheotomy up until he was 3 yrs old. During this time we spoke with a little girl about 10 who had just had her trache removed. She did not eat much when she had the trache either. She told us that the reason she didn't eat is because it felt like she was choking. As soon as the trache was removed she began eating and so has my grandson. I imagine that the obstruction of the trache would make a person feel like they are choking when they eat. It makes sense to me! LOLI would suggest that you work on soft foods like yogurt in very small bites and work your way up. Another thing that we noticed with my grandson was that if the food had a strong flavor (like salt or sour) he was more apt to eat it. We were told that his taste buds were not as strong because of the trache and he had no desire to eat because everything tasted the same! If it had a strong flavor that he c ould distingush then he was more apt to try it. My grandson had such trouble that we just gave him Pedisure and kept trying with the foods. At least he was able to get his nutrients and he enjoyed drinking it. Good LuckKristy ColvinIMDSA Presidentwww.imdsa.com>> My name is Sara and my Son iel is gtube fed and trached. Guest guest
I took care of a little boy with a trach and he had issues with anything in his mouth. We were doing exercises with him and putting flavored tongue depressors and nuk brushes in his mouth On Monday, June 12, 2006, at 11:52 PM, doihavtasay@... wrote: > I have no experience with a trache, but I do know the kids with NG > tubes don't care to eat much eat either until the tube comes out... > sure makes sense! > And with the narrow passages of kids with DS, how could their be room > for food and tubes?? > Just guessing now, as I said no experience at all > > I wish you the best in getting him to take food orally! > > -- > Carol in IL > > > > -------------- Original message -------------- > From: " Kristy Colvin " <imdsapresident@...> > Hi Sara, > My grandson has VATER syndrome and had a tracheotomy up until he was 3 > yrs old. Guest guest
Our kids with DS usually have that low sensitivity to taste --they love things spiced up, dressings added, etc. Also Evan loves things cold --insists on ice in all his drinks. I could not get Evan to eat as long as he had an NG tube --when we yanked it, he gradually and slowly began eating. I'm told it hurts when you swallow with a tube in there. Don't know about trachs and G-tubes.
