Guest guest
Hello TINA! Thanks for the thoughts! Greatly appreciated! drinks 2 liters of water a day for the past few years! I even put prune juice in it for the past 6 months. As far as senna..., we had this medication and apparently, one can get very lazy bowels if you use this. IT stimulates the bowels to move but when you stop the bowels can forget HOW to do this naturally. Hence after using it for 10 days on and off I decided not to go this route. His body needs to do it itself! I have started quinary from sunrider again. VERY costly, but I had using this when he was a baby. Maybe it will help his bowels too! As a baby HAD NO delays and I was even told by the nerologist that it was not possible that even had down syndrome because he was actually advanced developmentally in all areas. He could even say 3 words by the age of 8 months! So I am trying it again and put my 11 month old on it today too. Will let ya know how they are doing. Jezeriah is very delayed and I really have tried everything! Jezeriah's tone is so poor so maybe it will all come together for him like it did for . May this be the miracle we needed! I still would like other ideas to clear the bowels anyways, so keep the suggestions coming PLEASE! Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Pamela, First off is EVERYTHING you are feeding/giving him legal? Supplements do count. How much legal homemade yogurt are you giving him? Sounds like he might need more! I too would stay away from the senna because I *think* it's illegal and will only make your problems worse in the long run. The chocolate flavor for sure would out. Have you tried Elaines Magic Prune juice conoction on him? This stuff tastes great and it works like a charm too. Use unsweetend Sundmaid Prune juice- regular and simmer down a bottle to half it's volume. Cool, add a 'splash' of Tropicana Regular OJ to it. ( I think a splash would be like a 1/4 cup more or less. ) Then just start giving it to him. They all cautioned me to go slow, but she needed a LOT to go. So don't be afraid to keep adding til you get results. Also, how is his fat intake? SCD can be REAL low fat by accident and kids NEED fats. Try adding a tsp of olive to his foods, or just give him some in a dropper. He doesn't have aspiration problems does he? Are you giving fish oils too? How about coconut oil, butter, some other dairy fats? Without fats, things get real hard. I still give extra olive oil with her fish oil. She just seems to need those fats to be real regular. Her skin tends to dry out with out them too. Make sure you are legal, and that he is getting that yogurt, and then fats to help things slide. :-) And things should clear up for him. If you are desperate, try tummy rubs. If didn't have a bm by the third day, I gave her a supps when were first starting out. The less you can give by mouth that is illegal, the faster things will clear up.Pamela <canadiansiteforachondroplasia@...> wrote: . Guest guest
Thanks so much Carol! I just read about the special drink. I will not use tropicana. Can I use an oerganic sugar free orange juice? I do not give the yoguart yet. I did give a few days of goat yoguart. Just one table spoon with acidophilus. What type of probiotic can I use from Kirkmans? I do give probiotics I have that are not all OK for the diet but anyting is better than nothing...just unitl I get the good type. I can't get much raw goat milk and need all I have for the baby. So I may just have to use only a probiotic. is also asian and MILK is not generally tollerated amongst these races. Guest guest
To be on the safe side, you should just use fresh squeezed juice from organic oranges. :-) You just can't really trust anything in a bottle other then the ones researched as being legal. With SCD it's really better not to give illegals if you want to make gains. Otherwise it won't really work. It's the one BIG pain about SCD!! Have you tried giving him raw cow's milk yogurt? Or even just organic yogurt. I don't think it really matter if it's raw or not, because you are going to be 'killling' it anyway in the yogurt making process. Raw is great to drink straight up, but for yogurt, I personally wouldn't 'waste' it there! Also- even kids with ASD who could not tolerate any dairy can use SCD legal yogurt with out any problems, so you may want to give it a try. It's pretty important over all. I don't use Kirkman's probiotics see below- and I copies why yogurt is important over probiotics. I know we used Kirkman's Gold and it did nothing at all for . Only the yogurt works for her. Lactobacillus bulgaricus Streptococcus thermophilus.Lactobacillus acidophilus (optional) http://www.giprohealth.com/ Why SCD™ Yoghurt is Important The SCD™ corrects the balance of bacteria types in the gut by eliminating the food supply of the undesirable types and so starves them out. Introducing SCD™ yoghurt aids this process as it repopulates the gut with beneficial bacteria which further displaces the harmful bacterial. SCD™ yoghurt is also very nutritious and contains proteins vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fats, and much more! As the yogurt bacterial culture breaks down the lactose into simpler forms,we will absorb the simpler carbohydrate molecules instead of their feedingovergrowth of bacteria in the lower intestine. Its is often claimed that we can get more good bacteria from taking commercial probiotics. This is not the case and yoghurt is a very low cost source of probiotics. 24hr SCD™ yoghurt has a concentration of 3 billion cfu/ml which means that in just a cup of Yoghurt (236ml) you'll get 708 Billion beneficial bacteria and that's about 50 times more than that claimed for a typical 15 billion capsule. 24hr yoghurt also has a higher probiotic count than commercial yoghurt because it is fermented longer. The bacteria in yoghurt are fresh and in the environment they grew in, contrast this to the bacteria in a capsule which will be dormant. Because the cultures produce lactic acid from the lactose in the milk, many people who are lactose intolerant are able to tolerate yoghurt. For more information on Yoghurt see The Healing Crow Website Pamela <canadiansiteforachondroplasia@...> wrote: Thanks so much Carol! I just read about the special drink. I will not use tropicana. Guest guest
Sorry for the confusion Pamela!! I use organic milk for 's yogurt, so I call it 'organic yogurt' but it's the SCD homemade kind. Not store bought. :-) Organic milk is so much easier to come by then raw. You can also buy goat's milk at the store. Not sure if there is organic goat milk... must be!! Keep the baby on the goat's milk! Sounds like he is doing great with it. Don't fix what isn't broken. :-) Give him yogurt when you get some made too.Pamela <canadiansiteforachondroplasia@...> wrote: Hi Carol!Ok so I do have organic yoguart in the fridge....should I try a teaspoon for him? Guest guest
I am sorry I missed he was 16 YEARS old!! I had in more poor estrogen deprived brain 16 MONTHS... ya.. it's going to take longer to resolve things. You could also try increasing his magnesium intake for a while too. Vit C will also gve a person loose stools, so might help to increase that as well. I really encourage you to stay away from illegals till after things are moving smoothly for him. It's just makes things WORSE. Once you solve the problem, then add things in. Pamela <canadiansiteforachondroplasia@...> wrote: Ok thanks ever so much Sherry! Guest guest
Hi there, I'm a pretty new member of the list...mostly lurking, and a new DS mommy. My son is 8 months old, but we only found at a few months ago that he had Trisomy. Anyhow...can you point me to this diet? I really want to do everything that I can for him, and am now looking for diet info. He eats everything, has one tooth and seems to have no trouble with food...he loves it! Thanks in advance for the help. Eagle Acres RanchCraig Weaver and 308 Twin Lakes Rd.Winthrop, WA 98862(509) 996-7807 Re: Re: Helping clear bowels! Guest guest
Hello ! I had my 2 kids with DS boys(11 months and 16 yrs) on the GFCF and while researching recently for another mom I realized the GFCF was NOT enought. Hence I discovered the SCD (Selective Carbohydrate diet)! I have always believed we are waht we eat! I always felt our DS kids needed help with digestion! After much research I had realized that grains are very clogging for our kids especially kids with autism. I made sure Jezeriah my 11 month old had NO grains. St udies also show that babies should not get grains until at least 12 months of age. They do not have the enzymes to digest this properly. After reading about the SCD I realized this was good for both my kids and the GFCF diet was passe for us anyways! One month ago i started this diet with and make sure Jezeriah does not get sweet potatoe ever again. From what I see that was the only illegal thing i ever gave Jezeriah. Jezeriah's milk is raw goat milk and all foods are organic too. It has been so good for him to be able to do this all at such a young age! Anyways just look up the diet on the net and you will come across an Elaine something and she is the one who researched and made a book BREAKING the VISCIOUS CYCLE. I will be getting this book next week. Anyways a truly remarkable woman who has incredalbe insights and has done lots of research for anyone with digestive/bowels issues. If you like you can email me off list and we could even talk by phone if you like. I just know that this diet is a major breakthru for our DS kids! If you want any other info Carol from this list seems very informed! I am just 4 weeks into it all! Cheers! Guest guest
YOU are so very sweet Carol! Thank you for your wonderful words of encouragement! Because all the enzymes are dead in ALL milk except raw.....what effect can that have in the yoguart. I really want to make yoguart with the goat milk that is raw! Maybe I can find some extra and do this. I did manage to find goat yoguart. Could I try this? I gave Jezeriah peaches with tiny pieces of avacado minced in! He did so very well! He is trying to chew it all up! So cute to see! I will cook some carrots tomorrow and try tiny pieces of carrots in whatever I serve him. I use store bought organic jars of baby food. The only ones I can find is squash, peaches, prunes/pears, apples, carrots and occasionally peas. All other have some type of grain in it. My 11 month old son with DS is not autistic BUT I will not take a chance and use the SCD with him anyways. I hope jared baby food is ok? The proteins I use are organic chicken liver, organic lambs liver, organic eggs, organic avacado, organic chicken. I have to make this myself as I can not find already made stuff. Thanks everyone! Guest guest
Pamela, To be legal on SCD you can't use *any* jarred baby foods or premade yogurt. Sorry.... it's totally a make it yourself diet, except for a very few items you can buy off the shelf! I have made goat yogurt, and it's just as easy as the cow milk. Just watch your heating temps as the goat milk is more delicate. Good news is homemade is SO much healthier. ;-) There was a mom on pecanbread who's son would ONLY eat jarred foods, so she had them tested as the company said they were sugar free. The lab report came back saying it contained- sugar! I can't remember what the % was, but for a supposedly sugar free product, it was a lot! There is sugar in just about every single premade food item in the stores now. All the organic chicken, and turkey, I have found so far have been legal. But read labels as any that say they have 'broth' added, have been treated with sugar and are illegal. I am so happy to hear Jezeriah loved his snack! Make sure your fruits are very ripe. Sherry has a yummy pudding recipes she makes with avocado and banana that would be easy to make lumpy. You are doing great! Keep up the good work and just start making your own baby foods. I make very large batches, then freeze in ice cube trays, pop out and store in smaller zip locs. Don't put all your 'cubes' in one large freezer bag though! The ones at the bottom get yukky.. ask me how I know ;-)Pamela <canadiansiteforachondroplasia@...> wrote: YOU are so very sweet Carol! Thank you for your wonderful words of encouragement! Guest guest
<< Sherry has a yummy pudding recipes she makes with avocado and banana that would be easy to make lumpy.>> Yes here goes: one ripe avocado peeled and pitted, one very ripe banana, and a heaping TB of nut butter...cashew, almond, macadamia...all good. Plop them all in the blender (or the vitamix which is our best friend) and blend to desired consistency. You could leave out some avocado chunks or banaan and add them to make a chunkier meal. It's green and looks disgusting but it's delicious and very nourishing. <<Keep up the good work and just start making your own baby foods. I make very large batches, then freeze in ice cube trays, pop out and store in smaller zip locs. Don't put all your 'cubes' in one large freezer bag though! Also the plastic on the bags doesn't outgas alot when in the freezer. We rewash them and use again. We freeze up meats, veggies and fruits with this machine and it's great. An SCD frien on another list talked me into buying one of these gizmos and it gets a daily workout along with the vitamix. I was telling Carol...having to make everything from scratch is where the "Vicious" part of the title of Elaine's book comes in LOL. The beginning of the diet is actually a fiberless diet...sounds totally unhealthy but is what is needed to heal the gut. This is why everything needs to be carefully peeled, deseeded, and cooked...even overcooked at the beginning. You sound like an organic nut like me and I do use as much organic as possible, but if it is a choice between an organic jar of baby food and homecooked french cut string beans that are not organic Elaine said to go with the homemade everytime. It's ok if you want to pull your hair out and scream...we all did. Sherry
Guest guest
Ahhhhhhh! I can't believe this! I have been giving him the glass baby jars for 4 months! Maybe I will just puree some of the things and Chanysse are eating. If I were a millionaire I would start a company with ALL SCD food for babies! We have no meats for babies here in Quebec only fruits and vegies! All the meats are dinners with tons of rice flour or wheat! Our brand is ORGANICS could this possibly be OK? I only use organic stuff! Feeling discouraged now about this! I thougth I was ahead of the game with Jezeriah! What a dissapointment! Chanysse grabbed and ate 1/2 an uncooked apple this AM! uggggg! Well at least is OK! Thanks again Carol! Good to know all this now! Cheers!
