Guest guest
Faith was evaluated for speech therapy while in the NICU. Therapy started soon after she came home at 5 weeks old. The key to getting her therapy at such an early age was to call it feeding therapy, which she did have an extremely hard time with. But feeding therapy is done by a SLP so it all connects. She also gave me tips on feeding that would discourage tongue protrusion. She did and showed me how to do oral motor exercises. There is a whole lot more to speech than just making the sounds!! ette mom to Faith (9)DS --------- [DownSyndrome InfoExchange] Quote> > > > "There's hardly a man alive who dares to be just who he is without > doctoring up the impression."> > I heard this quote the other day in a compilation from > http://www.fireonth <http://www.fireonthealtar.com/> ealtar.com/ (I love> listening to these and have > even compiled a few of them) .> > Without sharing my thoughts at this time, I'm wondering if anyone else's > first thoughts on this were similar to mine? Guest guest
started traditional sppech therapy at around 1 month old and we worked on oral motor muscle strengthening, etc as well as trying to get him to babble, coo etc - used a few signs to help with frustration when he wanted something but always said the word along with it - today at 9 he is pretty verbal and clarity is our next hurdle but that is getting better - he can order his own meal at a restaurant and the waiter understands most everything, etc. Also has always spent a lot of time with typical peers plus a very talkative younger sis (just 20 mos younger) so that has helped a ton! ===================== From: pbeurrier@...
