Dear Group,

I just came back from my weekly blood check. This week, my counts went

below the normal. WBC goes from last week's 5.7 to 3.4, RBC 4.11, PLT

273 to 127, and ANC from 3.6 to 1.8. My onc said it's quite common. I

don't know if it's normal. I'm taking 400mg daily. Does anyone have

similar experince? Thanks,

Luning

Dear Luning,

Yes, all this is typical....so normal with Gleevec.

Gleevec is killing off the leukemia white cells, so until you have more

normal white cells, the white count is often below normal. Gleevec also

suppresses the bone marrow, and this can result in lower red cells as well.

It sounds like Gleevec is doing what you want it to do. :)

Hi Luning,

I agree with that this is very normal and even desirable. Most

people will have lower than normal counts initially after starting

Gleevec then many will see their counts recover to normal. Some

people will continue to have chronicly low counts throughout their

treatment and it's generally not a problem. If they drop too low,

there are options to consider but so far your counts look right on

track for having taken Gleevec for 4 weeks.

Take care,

Tracey
