Charlie:

Dr. Hamblin has already answered your question, but I

thought I would chime in. Dr. Hamblin is a CLL expert.

Reading his and Dr. Furman's posts on another board has

kept me from getting unnecessary treatment more than once. I

was told I needed treatment in late 06. I was told by my

next Doctor that I needed treatment in 08. I then got a

Doctor who is not a CLL expert, but consults with Dr. Byrd

who is one. I didn't get those previous treatments and am

still not close to needing treatment according to the

guidelines. Our bodies will only withstand a limited number

of treatments. Why waste one if we don't need it.

I did have my initial treatment with RF in 05 and although

it didn't hold long as I have the 17p deletion, it has given

me 6 years of almost symptom free CLL. I would definitely

get a second opinion and perhaps consult with one of the CLL

experts. However you just received a response from Dr.

Hamblin right here. And he is one of the best in the world.

My husband, , was diagnosed as having CLL in June of

2004, stage 0. 's oncologist said that he did not need

treatment at the present but would probably need treatment

within approximately 6 months. Even I knew that was not so.

We fired the oncologist and found another who cared enough

to inform himself concerning the guidelines for treatment.

When the time looked inevitable 3 1/2 years later, he asked

if we would like to see a specialist first. What a relief,

as I was not looking forward to bringing it up. The

oncologist's office made arrangements for to see

O'Brien, and he and she worked together on 's behalf.

First Cyclosporin and then FCR. remains in remission,

CR. My hero.

Warm wishes,

Jan
