Upcoming Insights Into Cancer lecture:

CANCER AND THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D -

TUESDAY AUGUST 9, 2011 7:00 PM - 9:00

L Hardy, MD, integrative medicine physician and Medical

Director of the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative

Oncology, discusses the latest thinking and controversies

over the importance of Vitamin D in the prevention of cancer

levels to higher rates of many common cancers including

colon, breast, prostate as well as pancreatic, ovarian and

bladder cancer. Clear benefits for bone health and fracture

prevention are well described along with positive effects in

cardiac health, immune function and mood. Optimum levels of

vitamin D, sun exposure versus supplements are discussed.

Symptom Management During Cancer Treatment: 2011 Update

Strouse, MD, UCLA Professor of Clinical Psychiatry,

pain management and palliative care physician, and Medical

Director of the UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital

outlines optimal, evidence-based approaches to managing

pain, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, depression, anxiety, and

other symptoms commonly experienced during treatments for a

variety of cancers. Participants are introduced to existing

published treatment guidelines and to the guiding concept of

symptom relief at all phases of cancer treatment, regardless

of whether the expected outcome is cure or chronic illness.

Novel and emerging techniques and treatments are also

addressed. The goal of this lecture is to help patients and

families expand their knowledge of symptom management in

order to work effectively with their treatment teams towards

the goal of optimal well being during treatment.

******* CLINICAL TRIAL ***********

The Mindful Awareness Practices Study (MAPS)

This research study is seeking women who were diagnosed with

early stage breast cancer, prior to age 50, to participate

in a randomized, wait-list controlled trial. We are

interested in evaluating the effectiveness of a mindfulness

meditation-based intervention study on stress management, as

well as other psychological, behavioral and biological

functioning. The mindfulness classes are specially tailored

to breast cancer survivors, are free to participants

(including parking costs), will take place at UCLA, and will

consist of weekly, two hour classes, for 6 weeks.

Participants will be randomly assigned to participate in

either the mindfulness intervention or to a wait-list

control group. The wait list control group will be able to

participate in mindfulness classes after all assessments

have been completed. Please call Deb Garet at 310-267-4423

for more information.
