Re: Personalizing treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia

At 12:52 PM 2/24/2011, " Dr. ? Computer may help in exam room " ,

In addition to the current technical limitations of " Dr. " , the

following op-ed discusses some of the more human issues that also

must be kept in mind for optimal use of such new technologies.

" Treat the Patient, Not the CT Scan " ; By ABRAHAM VERGHESE (professor

at the Stanford University School of Medicine)

SNIP..........

" An answer that might have been posed on " Jeopardy! " is, " An

emergency treatment that is administered by ear. " I wonder if

would have known the question (though he will now, cybertroller that

he is), which is, " What are words of comfort? "

-----------

Just the title of the op-ed reminded me of my first oncologist (a

cancer generalist) who refused to palpate my lymph nodes ( " a waste of

time " he said) when I requested that he do so, saying he relied on

only CT scans for assessing lymph nodes. It was our last visit, and

I still have not had a CT.

Al - Your first oncologist sounds like mine. He told me that I had to

get rid of all my animals. I got rid of him. My pets were the reason I

got out of bed even at my sickest because they needed me. Having them

kept me going on the worst days. He had no interest in or

understanding of their importance to me.

" One answer, this is the only way to do things " doctors scare me more

than my CLL. My advice to anyone who is uncomfortable with their

doctor(s), after my CLL ride, is dump him/her/them!!!! I worry about

people who post that they don't want to hurt their doctors feelings.

We pay for good (knowledgeable) care and are entitled to it.

My current doctor pokes around on every visit and has never mentioned

scans. I might need one some day, but for now I'm grateful for the

poking and prodding.
