Guest guest
Hi everyone- Just wanted to know is having a bone density test pretty much the norm when having this disease. My doctor has not yet recommended this test for me yet. So my next visit I will definitely ask. One more question... Is the test like getting an x-ray? No pain? No blood? No Tears, right??? I have enough and just want to be prepared for what I am asking for. I am sure he will send me for one. It is hard for him to remember and I am now on my third file in the office, so it is hard to go back and look. Luckily I keep copies of all tests I take (at least since I came back from the hospital in May of '99) and so I looked it up. About a year ago I went to a talk at our monthly mall walkers group that was given by a Rheumatologist. He was discussing osteoporosis and mentioned that if you have osteoarthritis regular DEXA bone density tests are not that reliable. It seems that the areas tested are prone to bone spurs and other calcium deposits that can be misinterpreted as bone and give false high (good) readings. He was advising lateral view DEXAs. Has anyone heard of this? or had experience with it? Thanks guys Hope everyone is feeling their best Ann K LI NY
Guest guest
Hi Keri, The Bone density test is noninvasive and you even get to leave your clothes on. Yes, you should have this test done...ask your doc to order it for you. Sometimes they just forget I guess. so, no pain, no blood, no tears. You will lie on a table and a machine hums over the top of you as it moves..doesn't take long either. ~~tricia~~ Wisconsin ***************************************************************************** ************ -- Re: bone density test Hi everyone- Just wanted to know is having a bone density test pretty much the norm when having this disease. Guest guest
No problem with a DEXA scan or its ilk. Very low dose radiation exposure so it's safe. I think it is a good idea especially in those with heavy steroid exposure.
