Guest guest
Can't anyone help me??? I posted this yesterday and still have not had any replies. =( Ok all, I hardly post. Just mostly read what seems to be of help to me and delete the rest (there's a mass volume of mail here, LOL). But anyway, I need you all and your help and wisdom now. We have finally found a new pediatrician for my 15 month old daughter Raina and we will also be taking the new baby to this doctor after he/she is born. I didn't get to meet the actual doctor today since she does A.M. appointmenst, I met the nurse practicianer and asked her a few questions about the doctor and herself. Come to discover, I am very blessed that the doctor and nurse, are in support of our family's choices. I can't say if the nurse actually agreed with everything but she said they get lots of moms who do home birth's (and they even make a home visit for baby's first check up at the home!) and are very pro-breastfeeding and have no problem with co-sleeping. This made me feel good. They never even questioned me when I told them we were vegan. No one even blinked or gave me dirty looks. Nothing. The nurse aid just shook her head and wrote it all down with the rest of Raina's info. So, to me they seem way more laid back than Raina's previous peditrician. Now here is the help I need. Raina was set up for 15 month " check up " , it will also be my oppertunity to actually meet the actual doctor, who I have been told by my referral person, that she is pro breast and pro family bed. Anyway. I will be breaking it to her that we have educated ourselves on vaccines and are choosing to no longer vaccinate. What do I do about anything she may say? Remember, I do not know this lady and I have no idea how she will take it, but I am aware that I cannot be forced into shots. Will I need any papers, like exemption? I remember someone sending a form on here once that I could sign saying I was aware of each shot, what it does, etc and that I refuse it. This is a big step for me. All the other things I do that are considered " un mainstream " like the family bed and being vegan were hard enough for me to choose and just deal with comments, etc. But I have heard horror stories of children actually being removed from their homes because they were unvaccinated. Is this true?? That scares me a great deal and I don't want it to happen. No one does. I just need tp be prepared for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that may or may not come up. Then again, I could be lucky since they support home birth (which some pedi's do NOT supprt and call it neglect) and may not have a problem about the whole deal, but then again she could surprise me and play 20 questions with me and treat me as if I'm an idiot (which I don't think that attitude came from the person who referred e to her, she is highly recommended by a doula I know). So I just need the basics and what to be prepared for. Hope anyone can help me! P.S. If it may help to know, we live in Kentucky, but the doctor is right across the river in Indiana, I do NOT know Indiana laws or very many Kentucky laws for vaccines. Thanks in advanced! -Hope

My tactic for talking to peditricians about my choice to vaccinate is not to. I hand them the notarized exemption form at the beginning of our meeting (usually to the nurse) and don't bring it up during the exam. I haven't had to do this but twice, since I don't believe in well-baby checkups. If the doc won't cooperate, get another one. My tip there is to find the youngest, newest ped in town. They won't turn you down. They're too hungry.
