A lurker here, but thought I'd chime in: My 5 yr old son (not aspie,

but my older daughter is) had two brief episodes of spontaneous

bruising like thumb sized prints/bruises covering his legs and torso.

I believe it is a condition called autoimmune thrombocytopenia (or

idiopathic) it can follow a viral illness. Supposedly an autoimmune

reaction against the platelets is triggered and is usually temporary

(for my son each episode of visible bruising lasted just a day or two)

but while the platelet count is low the child could experience

internal bleeding from an injury etc, a nosebleed might also be a

symptom. So he should get a blood work up to check his platelet

counts.

Interestingly, my oldest 16 y/o daughter (not my aspie dd who is 12)

is being monitored for possible lupus and one of her symptoms is

petechiae-pin point spots of blood leaking into the skin, it is also

due to low platelet counts caused by autoimmune problems. I have read

that autoimmune conditions, anxiety/ocd and aspergers/HFA can often

all exist within same family.

Hi ,

Yes, that is what I thought too, that the bruising is because of a low platelet count. But I didn't realize it could be caused from a virus. This is probably what my son had when he got sick, a virus. But the doctors didn't ever say that, were more worried about worse things at the time I think. When he was only 4 years old he had mono nucleoisis, and was sick for a long time. Kids that age don't usually get it but when they are older, is why they call it the "kissing disease." Anyway I always wondered if this somehow triggered the platelet problem, with the spleen and all. And now he has diabetes. He drank pretty heavily for years and I think this hurt his pancreas, but maybe it was already weakened from these things. He has to take medication now to keep his blood sugar down, but no insulin, and is doing pretty well as long as he eats right and doesn't drink at all anymore. Anyway he is going to be 45 years old tomorrow! My first little baby boy I had when I was only 18 years old.

Tells you how old I am, sheesh!

All of his blood tests have come out normal. Normal blood platelet

counts, normal bleeding time, normal iron... etc. Its a mystery! He

takes two vitamins a day with extra C in them as well. I am just

accepting the fact that he is an easy bruiser. Austin has two left

feet so that doesn't help. And lately I have had to restrain him when

he goes into rages. Him pulling away has caused more bruising....

I think I finally got through to the doctor this morning. I am

getting a Hematologists opinion.

Maybe that is the answer then. Austin also has PANDAS!

Pediatric Autoimmune Neurological Disorder Associated with

Streptococci.

Every time he gets sick, this is what happens. His behvavior goes

down hill and he bruises like crazy. It makes sense now. Thanks for

your help!

Hi

I know you already said you had your son tested for platelets, iron, etc. I just got on a roll when I wrote about my son, etc. I knew you were already doing all you could for your son, sorry if I implied you weren't. I hate it when people do that with me. Yes, I would want to find out why he is having the bruising though, some things take perseverance, well what am I saying, a LOT of things do especially with children. And I agree that would be good to get a heomatolotists opinion, assuming that is a blood doctor....

I have red hair and bruise really easy. This went away when I increased both my

vitamin C and cayenne or hot peppers. See Dick Quinn's book Left for Dead for

information on how cayenne helps to strengthen capillaries etc. and improve

circulation.

Tifanie,

It can be a sign of leukemia, AIDs, allergies, anemia, cancer, hemophilia

infections obesity and abnormal platelet functions related to a kidney or liver

disorder, according to Prescription for Nutritional Healing.

More likely, you need increased amounts of Vitamin C or Vitamin K, which is

found in alfalfa, you can take it in tablet form if you don't want to make a

salad from your nearest hayfield ;-)

I hope this helps,

Alfalfa is also available as liquid chlorophyll. We use DeSouza's because

it is in glass, does not contain preservatives, and they do not use

flavoring. Cheap. $12 for 16 ounces that lasts for 60 days. Use 1/2

tablespoon in glass of water. REFRIGERATE after opening. I use a straw and

be careful about spilling it.

Liquid chlorophyll can also be used as a blood transfusion as well as

coconut water, saline, or sea water. All are preferable to blood which

contains the sludge of another person. No dangerous side effects.

Chlorophyll has many other reasons to be used.

I would assure that she has a generous intake/supplement of Vitamin K (probably more than standard RDA of 120 mcg). Since it is one of the fat soluble vitamins, this may be low just like Vitamin A, D and E. When you say all the labs are normal, does this include a complete iron panel? Vitamin C, agreebit could be K as well.Jeanne Blankenship, MS RDOn Jan 14, 2010, at 4:05 PM, "katherinerountree" <rountreedietetics@...> wrote:

I have not heard of bruising as a result of the iodine protocol. I find when I bruise easily, it is a lack of vitamin C. Are you taking the companion nutrients? Vitamin C, Magnesium, Selenium and unrefined Celtic Sea Salt? Kathleen

I have started to bruise real bad and they are taking awhile

to go away. I have CLL/SLL, is this something to be

concerned about? I have always been prone to bruising, but

now they are really bad and I don't know how I am getting

them, and as bad as they are I really should remember

hitting myself on something. Just wondering if this might

be sign of progression. Thanks for your info and advice on

this matter.

no treatment yet (yeah!) W & W

There shouldn't be horrible bruising but some minor bruising and discoloration is normal.  Though they shouldn't be bruised to the point they hurt to touch. Jenn Mommy to Cole & Max
