Guest guest
There are few agencies around the state that provide this type of option for residential care. I work for one of them, Illinois Mentor. We have offices in the Chicago area, Peoria area, and the St. Louis Metro East area. What we do is find families that are willing to allow an individual with a developmental disability to live in their home with them. We look for individuals/ families that can make long term commitments. Our average placement is around 10 years and that number is increasing. We call the individuals/ families that do this " Mentor's " as they are mentoring the individual in their life in the community. The Mentor's home is licensed as a CILA (community integrated living arrangement) with the state of Illinois and is required to follow all state regulations. The Mentor's are DSP (direct support person) certified which is a certification mandated by the state of Illinois as well. The individuals living with their Mentor go to a day program, a sheltered workshop, community employment, or school if they are still enrolled. This program is a Medicaid funded program and if someone wanted to live in this type of a setting they would need to go to their local PAS agency to apply. It is a great program and a great alternative to a group home or institutional setting. Not very many people have heard about this type of model of care so I am doing my best to help other's know that they have options!!! If anyone has a group that they would like me to come speak with to inform others about this program I would be happy to do that as well. If anyone is interested in becoming a Mentor with our agency they could contact me. I can mail information to anyone who is interested. Also, I would be more than happy to answer any specific questions anyone has as well. > > I would be interested in learning more about this...I am sure there is a > large number of us .....please share > Cindi wha tyou know... >
