Guest guest
So, somebody is worried about people leaving restrooms without washing their hands. I didn't know you could catch the flu from your weinee. The main problem seems to be that the major U.S. Drug companies can not derive enough profit from normal vaccinations. Even though there is a profit it is not enough to justify making these really needed medications. What we need to do is jack the price up to $100.00 a shot then just watch the American pharmaceuticals rush in to fill the vacumn. They are all just pathetic money hungry corporations who can never be satisfied with a little profit, it must always be more, more, more. Guest guest
You know, I was just sitting here wondering why we don't produce our own flu vacs. Guess you answered that question! Guest guest
... the point of my comment about leaving a restroom w/out washing hands was to show that if people have such poor hygiene habits they're not gonna' wash their hands just because they coughed or sneezed in 'em, that's for sure!!! JES in NJ w/no source for a flu shot... doctor's offices have informed me they won't have vaccine this year and I should be seeking it from other sources... our county has none on hand and the next county over is limiting their 2800 shots to those over 65 w/medicare card and proof of residency w/in county > > So, somebody is worried about people leaving restrooms without > washing their hands. Guest guest
is limiting their 2800 shots to those over 65 w/medicare > card and proof of residency w/in county See, now this ticks me off. My mother at age 73 is less at risk from flu than I am at 40. She has no chronic lung or heart problems. Me, I have asthma, a repaired mitral valve and an ef of around 30%. Now, dispite the fact that I'm not allowed a flu shot because I've had Guillaumme-Barre in the past, which of us, mom or me, should qualify??? AGE is not the only factor in this. Just like it isn't the only factor in prescription drug prices. Nothing ticks me off more than hearing a politician say how they are helping the seniors with their prescriptions. Guest guest
BRIDGET, here is the criteria for getting a flu shot, check out #3. Earlier I posted a web site where you put in your zip code, and it gave you a location where you could get the shot. Here it is again (I found 2 nearby) http://www.findaflushot.com/lungusa/ Are 65 years old or older. Pneumonia and Influenza are the fifth leading cause of death for people over 65. Only about 69% of Americans 65 years and older receive the flu shot annually. These people should also get the pneumonia vaccine. Unlike the flu shot, this is a once in a lifetime shot and can be given at the same time as a flu shot. Medicare pays for both flu and pneumonia vaccines for people over 65. Are a resident of a nursing home or other chronic-care facility that houses people of any age who have chronic medical conditions. Have chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular systems, including asthma. Asthma is not exacerbated by the injection of the influenza vaccine according to an American Lung Association study. (N Engl J Med 2001; 345:1529-36.) However, only 10% of children with asthma and 39% of adults with asthma get the flu annually. Have required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the preceding year because of chronic metabolic diseases (diabetes), anemia, kidney disease, or immunosuppression (HIV). Are a child and or adolescent (6 months to 18 years old who is receiving long-term aspirin therapy and, therefore, might be at risk for experiencing Reye syndrome after influenza infection. Are a woman who will be pregnant during the influenza season. Are a child aged 6-23 months. Are between the ages of 50-64 years. Can transmit influenza to those at high risk such as health care professionals, employees of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities, providers of home care, household contacts (including children) of high-risk persons and out-of-home caregivers of children 0-23 months. Guest guest
I know. If I hadn't had Guillaume-Barre, I would have gotten one two years ago. But this year, it seems that many places are limiting who gets them to ONLY those over 65. Guest guest
I like this one. I think next month I will get pregnant (not). Dave is 63, has CHF, COPD, SCD, TIA's to name a few. If I tell them at the clinic that I may get pregnant next month can I get a flu shot? Oh well maybe not so can you give the shot to someone who "really" needs it. Give me a break! After 3 days of making phone calls will get a shot. But only because Electric Boat gave all their vacines to the local VNA. Then I called the VNA and they said "oh ya, he is homebound so he can have a shot". Please excuse sick sence of humor, tired from trying to find hubby shot and sick myself right now. Hope it isn't the flu. It is going around the building... Gail http://www.findaflushot.com/lungusa/ * Are a woman who will be pregnant during the influenza season. Guest guest
Anyone who is in bad health is allowed to get the flu shot, regardless of age. Our Doctor told us that today was the last day he would be able to give the shots, due to the shortage. I know. If I hadn't had Guillaume-Barre, I would have gotten one two years ago. But this year, it seems that many places are limiting who gets them to ONLY those over 65. Guest guest
JES said, " our county has none on hand and the next county over is limiting their 2800 shots to those over 65 w/medicare card and proof of residency w/in county " That is what my comments were regarding. Yes, if there were loads of vacs floating around someone my age could get one. But some plces are limiting by age because of the shortage, a practice I believe to be absurd. Guest guest
if anyone doubts the truth in my previous post feel free to contact the board of health in Atlantic County, NJ USA... they recieved about 1/2 the vaccine they had ordered and are sticking strickly to their guidelines of being 65 or over, medicare card and proof of residency, period... no exceptions will be made! on a bright note, after 3 wks of searching and being told on Tues my PCP nor my husband's oncologist, or our cardio will have any vaccine, I found one ACME supermarket about 20 miles away w/40 doses... we set the alarm for 4AM, were out of house by 5 and arrived at location at 5:30AM to recieve #10 & 11 as if we were waiting to be served by the deli dept. ... after which we stood around for another 4 1/2 hrs and got our shots ... as it turned out, they had 150 shots to be given w/only restiction that you meet the high-risk requirements... I hope others are as fortunate as we were... this was our last chance as the only 3 remaining clinics anywhere to be found in this area are those run by the Atlantic Co. health dept and we don't meet any of their requirements on another bright note, many of the private businesses in our area are also turning over their vaccine that was to be used for their employees to the county to be dispensed as needed... there are many good folks out there... you just have to know where to look to see the roses amongst the thorns JES in Cape May Co., NJ, USA > > > JES said, " our county has none on hand and the next > county over is limiting their 2800 shots to those over 65 w/medicare > card and proof of residency w/in county " > > That is what my comments were regarding. Guest guest
Oh my goodness! That is terrible! -- Flu shots Hello Yesterday, I went to one of the few Krogers that had not cancelled their flu-shot campaign and the line was through half the store. It took about 2.5 to 3.5 hours to get a shot. Fortunately they served cookies, cakes orange juice and water to the people in line otherwise I'm sure plenty of people would've just fainted from low sugar levels. They also told us that in Lousiana, one of their stores only had 250 shots available but 2,000 people showed up so there was a riot and the police were called in. It's pretty sad that the best way to get shots is via these commercial flu-shot campaigns, the Doctor's never seem to have enough or they get their shipments much later than the big companies. Almost all the flu-shot campaigns here have been canceled but the corporate websites haven't been updated to reflect which, the best website to find shots seem to be www.findaflushot.com which is the American Lung Association, that's where I found out about the Krogers I went to yesterday even though it's about 10 miles away, the next closest would be today at about 15 miles away, after that the next is over 25 miles away. The shots are few and far between here in Texas. Guest guest
Hank, I'd like to think there is a way of controlling all the contaminated vaccine by using lot numbers or something similar ... not to do so makes no sense to me ... I have heard that some doctor's offices had to send their vaccine back as it was part of the contaminated batches ... seems to me this article goes a bit over board and suggests that there aren't ways of tracing the contaminated batches... I feel quite safe in assuming there is and the CDC and/or FDA are on the case. JES in NJ > I don't know if there is any truth to this, but here it is..... > Check it out.. Guest guest
I am not as confident as you in the CDC and particularly in the FDA. Keep in mind that it is our government that permitted cows infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy into our country through inadequate USDA testing and no means of tracking. Guest guest
You want to be really frightened about what come into this country . . . only 3% of all plants entering the US are inspected for diseases and insects or even just looked at to make sure they really are plants. Guest guest
I think she was directing it to me & Llinda who aren't feeling well. Did you get your flu shot, Danny? Guest guest
Gail over the years Bruce and I have worked out a method for traveling..Very simple he drives and I read the map then plot course of travel.. That way no hassles..He would ask for directions if needed..Has given up on me asking, I won't..Plus I just love maps don't know why..Hey how did you all get off the course you where going?? I thought this was a confab concerning flu shots!!Kathy B.. RE: Re: flu shots I find that strange in men.My husband won't ask for directions and I would rather stop at the nearest garage and ask then spend a fortune on gas trying to find it.It doesn't make sense to me. It's probably the same hormone that prevents some guys from asking directions, something I do all the time. Visual aids help but physical prompts are better. lol Rock-on dannyGail Deveaux <gaila@...> wrote: Actually I find the men in the groups I belong to here and other hep c groups are pretty good.I think in some ways this illness helps the men open up more then they normally would.Theres not really any difference on how we all feel.Women may be a little more outspoken. It happens to guys also. No need to defend yourself, just realize that some guys belong to this group and even though we're outnumbered maybe we're the advance party of men that aren't afraid to show their feelings. rock-on dannysuzie <suzieandsandy@...> wrote: Danny, It wasn't a private conversation - right there in front of the whole group. We were just bitching & whining about being sick, so I decided to check out flu shots since there was that big kerfluffle last Sept about the U S not having enuff. Butt in anytime Cap'n we love to hear from you. I was just hanging around waiting for the eye surgeon to discharge me so I got one. Which was a good move as last year Liz tore me a new A****** for not getting one. Suzie, I'm sorry for my remark, I did not realize it was a private conversation. Kathy, I realize that the women post more, but you gals vastly outnumber the guys.At least we try to keep up.
