My son once had a fever that burned so hot that I couldn't stand to touch him, let alone get too near him. I don't use thermometers, but I'd guess it possibly reached the 105 range at some point (he was a VERY sick little boy). I took him to the hospital at that point and they recorded a 104 AFTER he was given Tylenol! Turned out he had Kawasaki Syndrome (very interesting illness BTW). In this example (and in many others I'm sure) fever was not the problem that concerned me mostly, but the fact that he had quickly become very dehydrated and was beyond lethargic. In light of that, I gauge illness severity based on energy/ behavior firstly, fluid intake over a 24-48hr period, and lastly disease syptoms and fever. Don't get me wrong, I know fever can be dangerous, but I think the fear factor is overplayed. Maybe a different question would be " How sick does your child have to be to take them to the doctor's/ ER? " . Mother's intuition is a major factor in the answer to that question- I trust mine completely and it has never failed me. =) Cheryl
