This appears to be the trial described at:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01088048?term=CAL-101 & rank=1

which is a study of " CAL-101 in Combination With Chemotherapeutic

Agents and CD20 mAb " , in relapsed/refractory patients 18yrs or older.

Dr. Furman, why would a patient, who is refractory to Rituxan, be

treated with CAL-101 + Rituxan instead of CAL-101 monotherapy?

Is this simply because the only ongoing CAL-101 monotherapy trial for

relapsed/refractory patients is no longer accepting new patients?

Are pre- & post-treatment marrow biopsies now more common for CAL-101 trials?

Beth - Will your husband continue taking CAL101 as

maintenance or is he finished with all treatments for now?

Very promising news for the rest of us!

Pat, he will continue to take 2 150 mg pills of CAL 101

daily for the next two years or as long as the drug

continues to work. I am hoping that will be a very long

time, not only for us but also because it will be a viable

treatment for many CLLers.

Al, although refractory to Rituxan as a monotherapy, the

Rituxan did work very well when combined with CAL101. I

think it would be even better used on patients who were not

refractory to Rituxan. Of course all of this is

speculation at this point since this is a phase 1 trial.

But we have hope.

I wish others would post about their experiences in the

trials as I have heard very little about the other phases of

the trial, being combined with other drugs.

My husband is doing CAL-101 as monotherapy (50 mg. 2X day).

His mom is in the same trial as your husband (100 mg.

CAL-101 2X day plus Rituxan). Both are doing great!

I post updates about both of them on my blog (for family,

friends and other CLLEers) after each appointment or

whenever there is something eventful enough to mention.

However, I don't post strictly about CLL. On any given day,

you could find a variety of topics and also pictures of

grandchildren. LOL.

I have been on Cal 101 for over a year and my numbers have

been good all along except for platlets around 60 I hanen't

had a fever or blood transfusion until this week sick with

fever cough sore throat was hospitalized for 4 days . Only

missed one day of Cal 101 and I'm better now! No side

effects from the drug except I noticed my hair is no longer

frizzy and wavy! Something I've always wanted! I am very

lucky Cal 101 works great for me thus far! 14 months makes

my life liveable!

I guess I forgot to add that my husband just completed the

first 12 28-day cycles and is now in the extended phase of

the study. He began in late May of 2010. My mother-in-law

began in October of 2010. I've posted about their

experiences since they began (and before for ). If you

are interested in more details, numbers, bone marrow

biopsies, etc., you can search my blog for the specific

posts where I documented those details!
