Hello Everyone,

My name is ' , I am 38 years old and I was diagnosed with CML in December

2006. I am new to all of this and I have so many questions. I was accepted at

MDACC and my dr. put me on Gleevec 400mg. I am having a few side effects from

the drug. My eyes stay extremely swollen all day long. I also CANNOT eat. I

weight 95lbs and I have to make myself eat. I was wondering if anyone else is

experiencing these side effects and if they go away over time? Any responses

would be appreciated.

HI '

Often the side effects get less over time, so maybe knowing this is

helpful. You might try putting a mild cold pack on your eyes (they make

some gel masks) or try moist tea bags (chamomile is good). About the

eating....do you mean you cannot eat because of nausea or is it lack of

appetite? both can happen with Gleevec. Discuss this with your doctor, or

your MDACC physician's assistant......sometimes a medication can help.

Otherwise, get calories in however you can...like one of the supplement

drinks or protein drinks. I have had periods of lack of appetite and just

ate comfort foods, even if they were not the most healthy choices.

Hopefully this will lessen for you. Gleevec is a great drug for what used

to be a very bad disease to have......so keeping it all in perspective can

also be helpful. Good luck to you,

C.

, my grandmother has been losing her appetite, along with weight

since she has been taking Gleevec. She has been taking Phenergen for

nausea lately and she has gained a few pounds back.

Hi '

Sorry you are not feeling well. I have the same deal with eating. Gleevec can

give you kind of low level nausea etc that makes eating not too attractive. May

I suggest what I do? Include a high protein milkshake with your daily intake.

Can get a cheap blender, some protein powder from a health food store and then

add milk, ice cream, crushed ice, friut - whatever tastes good to you. Again try

to add at least 20g of protein via the powder. Can make this taste really good

and cost per serving is just pennies. Might take a multi viatmin daily also.

Personally I have my biggest meal at night and preceed this with a glass of red

wine. Tastes good and stimulates the appetite. See your doctor about some

diurectics to minimixe the eye puffiness. Will help, but unfortunately, probably

not make it go away altogether.

Good Luck

Rick

I think I have every known GI problem related to Gleevec. I have been

hospitalized numerous times for dehydration associated with the side effects of

Gleevec and severe Gastritis. The answer is yes. For me, I have also had/have

nausea, vomiting. ongoing diarrhea, upset stomach, loose stools. I also

have an incredible gurgley stomach about 30-4 minutes after taking my Gleevec.

Due to these side effects as well as the intense muscle and bone aches I get

after taking it, I take my Gleevec with a evening snack before bed so that I

can sleep through the worse of the effects. You have to play around with it

and see what works best for you.

Hope that helps in some way- :)
