Hi --

I have searched back through emails, and I am so sorry for asking this again

(I know you have said it already): how much Vitamin D do you take? And, it

sounds like this is not something my husband (CML patient) should just start

taking on his own, rather--he should get his levels tested, talk to his doc,

and then start taking it? Meaning--it should be monitored?

Thanks!

,

You could easily take 400-800 iu a day without a problem.......again Dr. Oz

was on Oprah today and said that if you live north of Atlanta, you will not

get enough Vit D from the sun in the winter (and he called it the

anti-cancer vitamin). I take 2,000 iu a day.......and I am no where near

the max limit.

Like Esther, I also took a weekly 50,000 iu pill for 7 doses to bring my

level up.....but you need testing to do this.

The reason we monitor it for me is that we want to get up to the max

limit...so we want to know where i am.........but in 2 years of taking

2,000 a day I have not gotten there......but we are all different on this.

My naturopath thinks it is very important for a cancer patient and she

wants my level to be at least 80 on the test (and 37 to 80 is now the

normal range). Hope this helps. Generally if you go into a good health food

store, they will give you good information.

hi i take 50,000 iu of vitamin D. I started out one pill

a week for 4weeks, that was when my level was 15. After 4 weeks I

took it once a month my next blood work which was 2 months later was

57. I just had my blood work done again 2 months later it is now

33.1 , i now have to take it twice a month. You need to be tested and

the vitamins are a persription.Do you think maybe the Gleevec

depletes your vitamin D I'm asking this because My potassiom was low

too.Although I was quite low before I went on Gleevec,or maybe it's

the cancer that depletes it?HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ALL

Hi Esther,

My last note, even though you were in the subject line, was really just a

response to who asked a question-----don't want you to think I am

repeating myself to you.

Yes, the 50,000 iu of Vit D is a prescription..........but you can get

2,000 iu over the counter for daily use. Like you, my start test level was

less than 10........then it has slowly gone up and down some (over 2 years)

and is now about 65. I also use cod liver oil daily, which is another

source of Vit D.

I am not sure why it is so low in some of us.........but I think that Dr.

Oz said that it was too low in most people and needs supplementing. I

really liked his explanation of alternative medicine.... as mainly just

medicine that we have not traditionally used, like acupuncture (which is

over 2,000 years old). Also, his thinking that the 'new era' of medicine

will be 'energy medicine'......and that even traditional MDs are starting

to realize this more! I live in a community with a wealth of alternative

medical care available and am happy for that.

Happy Valentine's Day to you also, and our other list mates.
