Guest guest
Hi , I think for a large majority of those with symptoms of hypothyroidism, it does 'appear' to work - but this is only in those cases who have very low secretion of thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland. It is absolutely NO use for people who have peripheral thyroid hormone resistance or deficiency at cellular level. They need T3. Perhaps they are beginning to see sense after all this time. The drug companies are not going to like this if it is found, at last, that levothyroxine alone is pretty useless for a large minority of sufferers. Luv - Sheila I don't know if all this has made the papers in UK but there is a big scandal going on in France about a drug that was given to diabetics to help them lose weight. It turned out that this drug (MEDIATOR) was giving people mitral valve problems and was probably responsible for a large number of deaths. To add to the scandal, it appears that certain people have been saying that it was dangerous for over 10 years and that the powers that be of the medical world did nothing about it. The spin off from all this is a list of drugs that has been published this afternoon. These drugs are all going to be reviewed because it is considered that even if they do what they are supposed to, they have too many drawbacks (!!?) whatever that means. One of the drugs on this list is the standard T4 drug that is given to people who have thyroid problems. This begs the question, what will they give thyroid patients if it is withdrawn from the market? It is going to be interesting to see how all this turns out........ Guest guest
The product is called Lévothyrox. Yes I am in France and I used to take this stuff everyday!!!! There is a bit of buzz about it on the French thyroid fiorum that I belong to because everyone is asking what they are going to replace it with if it is banned. In my opinion we are a while from it being banned. First of all the decision has to taken to ban it and then the decision has to be taken about what to replace it with and that is a lot of decisions for this country. Guest guest
Sheila, As I said to Lilian, I'm not holding my breath on this one. Lots of decisions will have to be made (at least two) and in this bureaucratic paradise, that takes time. But I suppose it is progress of a sort. MacG. Guest guest
HI SARAH Do you know what the ingrediants in this thyroid drug are, and could the same drug appear under a different name in the UK and other countries. Many of us have not got well on T4,and I have had to stop taking it altogether as I am better off without it. T4 is a sodium in fact salt, and it raises blood pressure which in turn is not good for ones heart or kidneys. Goldshield had mentioned that they were going to change their formula, so could this be something to do with it. Sodium causes calcium to be lost through the kidneys, so in turn can it be the cause of our bone problems or stones in the kidneys. How many years did you take this for . Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, The amount of sodium that goes with 100micrograms of thyroxine is tiny in comparison with the usual salt load. Other sources of salt are more important. Guest guest
Hi ,That's what I was looking for.I don't think it's loss here is so significant as it is very common for people to have thyroidectomies here so Cynomel is available and there are a number of doctors who prescribe it. They also prescribe Euthyral which is 100mcg Levo + 20mcg T3. I think they will change to T3 regime, or who knows maybe even NDT.
