Hi andy, FT4 will take at least 25 days to level out, but TSH can sometimes lag behind months- others have a sensitive reaction so that's a difficult one! test refusal is probably penny pinching- some docs will, some won't. > thyroid treatment > From: gomjabbar666@...> Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2011 08:41:07 +0000> Subject: Curious..how long does it take to return to baseline levels after stopping NDT?> > Hi..I had to stop NDT a week & a half ago due to intolerance issues,I have an appointment with my GP in a weeks time to request tests for the usual suspects,ferritin,B12,folate,D,etc...> > I'm curious,if he decides to include a thyroid function test what would it show three to four weeks post NDT,I'm assuming my T4 would still show elevated beyond baseline for 4-6 weeks & TSH would show lower than my normal baseline..is that correct?> > Another quickie..I recently supplied my hypo symptomatic mother with a list of tests to request from her GP..he ok'd most of them but wouldn't ok 25-hydroxyvitamin D,potassium,magnesium,zinc,copper..are these tests not available on the NHS..or is this simply NHS penny pinching?> > As always thanks for your time..> > ~Andy~> > > > ------------------------------------> > TPA is not medically qualified. If they only test TSH and fT4, your TSH will probably still

register as quite suppressed as it can take weeks to catch up with either

taking thyroid hormone replacement or stopping it. Your free T4 will probably

also show that it is reasonably high in the reference range, so your doctor

will think your thyroid tests are OK. Try to avoid these if you can until you

have been off thyroid meds for at least 6 weeks - longer if possible Andy.

I

would ask your Mum to write to her GP and ask him exactly WHY he refuses to do

these tests as every one of them is VERY important in their association with

thyroid hormone absorption. See the attached and show these, if necessary, to

the doctor in question. Yes, doctors are trying to save their surgeries money

when they are there to save their patients health. It is up to us to demand our

doctors give us good clear evidence as to why there is no reason to carry out such

testing - and they are not able to. Call their bluff!

Another quickie..I recently supplied my hypo symptomatic mother with a list of

tests to request from her GP..he ok'd most of them but wouldn't ok

25-hydroxyvitamin D,potassium,magnesium,zinc,copper..are these tests not

available on the NHS..or is this simply NHS penny pinching?

As always thanks for your time..

Hi Sheila, thanks for your reply..my GP doesn't know I'm self treating so I'll

try & wriggle out of a TFT..the only thyroid test I'm going to ask for is

thyroid antibodies TPO & TgAb.

Dealing with NHS doctors is a constant battle against arrogance & budget

restraints..I supplied my mum with a list of all necessary tests to hand to her

GP,I made it clear in writing that they where essential,he decided to pick &

choose..ARRRRGH!..even though the tests he authorized weren't as comprehensive

as I asked for I'm hopeful they will be a good starting point to resolving her

health issues.

I'll take your advice & make all future test requests in writing,I'll ask that

all letters be included in her medical records,if her GP refuses any tests I'll

ask for a letter explaining his reasons why.

As always thanks for your time,it's very much appreciated..
