Guest guest
Hello Dawn, it does appear that many endocrinologists/GP's make the claim that excess thyroid hormone can cause osteoporosis and yes, if you take too high a dose of thyroid hormone replacement can also cause osteoporosis - BUT - we are not talking about taking too high a dose but a dose that will take away symptoms and make our body and brain function normally.Taking T3 will NOT automatically lead to osteoporosis and I would shoot him down in flames if my endocrinologist dared to say that to me. What these doctors appear to forget is that studies have shown that osteoporosis can worsen with age, (whether taking thyroid hormone replacement or not ) through inactivity, and hormonal deficiencies (oestrogen, testosterone, and DHEA). Currently, the rate of osteoporosis among older women is estimated to be as high as around 29 percent. Yet only 13 percent of older women have been properly diagnosed with the disease. Osteoporosis can be easily diagnosed by performing a simple test called a DEXA scan. I have had two bone scans done since starting natural thyroid extract, the first showed strong bones, the second - as my endocrinologist put it, showed I " had the bones of an elephant " . I would definitely make him back up his claim that taking any form of the active thyroid hormone T3 leads to osteoporosis. Your friend needs to get a copy of the letter the endo. sends to her GP so we get his exact wording about this. If he doesn't produce the scientific evidence, he needs to be taken to task as this frightens many patients. I have not found any studies to back up their claims. He should read Dr Broda work re low temperature and low metabolism. He doesn't need a thermometer to see whether she is cold or not, feeling the back of her arms, or even putting his hands on any part of her body would tell him whether or not she was cold. Sounds a bit of an endoprat to me Dawn. Endoprats like this hate doctors like Peatfield/Skinner/Myhill ect. because they know they all have brilliant reputations of actually being able to give back normal health to thousands of their NHS failures. It is endoprats like this who are creating the failures because they are so restricted by the RCP, BTA guidance on the diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism. If these 'guidelines' took into account those patients who remained ill on T4 only therapy because they are suffering with peripheral resistance to thyroid hormone at cellular level, and treated them properly with the active thyroid hormone T3, there would be no need for the hundreds of thyroid groups, both Internet and Local, throughout the world and TPA would simply not exist. I guess your friend has now exhausted all possible NHS resources. Luv - Sheila He said that he felt that she would take matters into her own hands regarding T3 and that some of the 'internet' doctors would only make matters worse as she may get better initially, but this would only mask the underlying problems (CFS), and it would be difficult to put her right once she has put her body through all this. I would like to get the info on AF if anyone knows anything about it.
